Over the past 30 years, KGS Group has grown to be the largest employee-owned engineering consulting firm based in Manitoba. We work in nearly every area of engineering and have led significant public and private projects across Canada and internationally.


Our work in Manitoba ranges from the design and construction of major hydro dams to the first large diameter tunneling works in the province to a variety of engineering services for noteworthy local landmarks such as The Forks Riverwalk, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Bell MTS Centre and Birds Hill Lake, to name a few.


The Role

The Controller is a key leadership position reporting to the Director, Corporate Finance. This role supports the Director by managing the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, including overseeing the accounting team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. The Controller contributes to budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities while identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and improve financial processes. With strong leadership and technical expertise, the Controller mentors team members, fosters collaboration, and helps implement innovative technologies to support the organizations financial goals.


Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the accounting process, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Compile, analyze, and present detailed financial statements, management reports, and forecasts to support decision-making. Ensure information is accurate, timely, and aligned with organizational objectives, while effectively communicating key insights to stakeholders.
  • Manage and develop the accounting team, including recruitment, performance reviews, and professional development, fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Regularly evaluate accounting processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial management. Lead initiatives to automate and optimize workflows, leveraging technology and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Monitor and manage all aspects of tax compliance, including corporate income taxes, sales taxes, and other applicable obligations. Ensure adherence to company policies, industry standards, and government reporting requirements. Prepare and file accurate tax returns and reports in a timely manner, mitigating risks and avoiding penalties.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors, ensuring smooth and efficient audit processes. Prepare required documentation, facilitate access to financial records, and respond to audit inquiries promptly.
  • Act as a key advocate for leveraging technology to generate meaningful financial insights, automate reporting processes, and improve data accuracy. Provide training and support to the accounting team and other stakeholders to maximize system utilization and ensure consistent adoption across the organization.


About You

To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights could include:


  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, showcasing increasing responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations and best practices.
  • Proven leadership skills with strong people management abilities to inspire and develop a high-performing team.
  • A continuous learner who embraces new technologies and seeks innovative ways to improve processes and efficiency.
  • A proactive team player who takes initiative and drives results.
  • Strong decision-making capabilities, with the ability to assess situations and provide insightful recommendations.
