The Visual Language Interpreter facilitates communication between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students and staff by providing interpretive services in and out of the classroom and reinforcing the students educational program.

Compensation
Term Assignments:As per the CUPE collective agreement the wage for the long term assignments is $38.77 per hour plus benefits package: Municipal Pension, health, vacation & sick benefits effective once required hours have been met.
Casual On-Call Spareboard: The wages for the Casual On-Call positions is $38.77 per hour with no benefit or pension options. Opportunities will exist to apply into Term Assignments as they become available.

Qualifications Include
- Successful completion of a two (2) year post-secondary program in Sign Language Interpretation and at least one year related experience
- Successful completion of grade 12, active member of Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI)
- Must have experience as an interpreter
- Very high level of fluency in ASL required
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and community resources
- Experience working and/or interacting with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people, especially children
- Understanding of the language implications in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
- Ability to adjust the signing, education and communication levels required, in accordance with students needs
- Ability to support student(s) in the implementation of his/her IEP
- Ability to understand and work with curriculum at the appropriate grade level (s)
- Ability to be flexible in order to meet the varying academic, social, emotional and behavioural needs of students
- Knowledge of the basic aspects of students physical, educational, social and emotional development
- Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as a member of an educational team
- Effective interpersonal skills
