In compliance with Board policies and procedures, responsible for two main areas of responsibility for any student with a communication difficulty involving speaking, listening, reading and/or writing. These areas are: consultation and liaison, and assessment.

Major Responsibilities

  • To consult with regular and special education teachers, Student Services staff, educational assistants, administrative staff and parents regarding speech and language programs, resources, accommodations and modifications for any student with a communication difficulty involving speaking, listening, reading, and/or writing.
  • To act as a resource to the In-School Team to support the preventative approach through consultation.
  • To provide workshops to meet identified needs of York Region District School Board staff.
  • To liaise with and refer to community services and agencies such as Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and hospitals.
  • To assist in the interpretation of medical information and assessment reports from outside agencies as they relate to Speech-Language Pathology.
  • To support the development of the Individual Education Plan.
  • To provide formal and informal assessment and observation of students with communication difficulties involving speaking, listening, reading and/or writing.
  • To interpret and discuss assessment results, recommendations and program modifications with appropriate staff and parents.
  • To assist preschool children with special needs to make the transition from preschool programs to school programs.
  • To work with teachers and administration to assess students needs with respect to SEA funding.
  • To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Chief of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Services, Assistant Coordinators of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Services, Principals of Student Services, Student Services Coordinators and/or the Superintendent of Student Services.

Education, Experience And Qualifications

  • A Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology and registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
  • Effective verbal and written communication, interpersonal, analytical and computer skills are required.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required.

Important Information For CUPE 1734 Members

LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position. Ten (10) month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services. This does not prevent employees from applying for a position or from applying for a promotion during the twelve (12) month period.

A Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) must be completed by the police services in the jurisdiction in which you reside, this is based on your home address (only accepted by police services within Canada); must be satisfactory to the YRDSB and completed within six (6) months prior to the scheduled start date. It is the candidates responsibility to provide the results to the Board upon instruction.

We will accept satisfactory PVSCs that name any other school board and other employers (daycare centers, OCT, and employers that would require a police check for vulnerable persons) in Ontario and obtained within the last six (6) months.
