Job Summary:

The Manager will be responsible for leading, executing and overseeing the pricing and costing of retail gas, electricity, and other revenue streams for residential and small commercial customers reporting to the Senior Manager, Retail Optimization & Analysis. This will include reviewing and creating acquisition and renewal campaigns operationally along with collecting historical usage, load profile analysis, cost component review and validation. This individual will provide market analysis with data, trends, strategies to stay competitive in the market.

While working as part of a team, the individual has a high degree of accountability and responsibility for the strategic direction and provides recommendations for the products and services that best fit the long-term strategy of the business unit. The individual should have in-depth knowledge of the Canada energy market fundamentals and can critically evaluate, and model risk associated with costing various retail energy components. The individual will work closely with various groups in Retail Operations, Product Development, Marketing, Portfolio Management, Forecasting and Market operations located in Calgary, AB and Houston, TX. The individual will also interact with IT and drive the implementation of system and process migrations and improvements.

Other responsibilities include operational analysis, and other ad hoc financial analysis. The position requires strong data, financial and customer modelling and analytics experience, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to meet stringent and regular deadlines.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

The Manager is responsible and will play a key role in leading regional pricing and structuring for residential and small commercial customers and provide market competitive analysis within the Canada Competitive Go to Market team. This position will ensure timely, accurate pricing and strategic cost management while supporting sales channels and driving profitability:

  • Transaction Costing & Structuring: Develop daily transaction costs and structures for retail gas and electricity products, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Pricing Cost Curves: Maintain and enhance pricing cost curves (Cost of Goods Sold) for non-traded energy components, including load-following premiums and demand-based costs (e.g., transmission).
  • Sales Channel Support: Provide precise transaction costs to support all sales channels effectively.
  • Data Analysis & Risk Assessment: Analyze consumption patterns, usage exceptions, and assess risk and cost impacts.
  • Market & Competitor Analysis: Deliver insights on market trends, strategies, and competition to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Market Monitoring: Track market conditions to identify opportunities to enhance margins and minimize retail risk.
  • Campaign Execution: Operationalize acquisition and renewal campaigns, including segmentation and pricing strategies for retention efforts.
  • Renewal Pricing Management: Develop and manage renewal pricing strategies, ensuring seamless integration into internal systems.
  • Reporting & Dashboards: Oversee the development of reporting dashboards, identifying opportunities for process and performance improvements.
  • Cost Discrepancy Review: Investigate and analyze cost discrepancies based on market feedback.
  • Model Development: Develop analytical models and tools based on complex energy market indicators and cost components.
  • System Integration & Quality Control: Manage pricing integration processes and quality checks within internal systems.
  • Customer Analysis: Analyze customer data to inform market segmentation and product targeting.
  • Data Management: Process and analyze large datasets to support pricing and strategy decisions.
  • Supply Position Oversight: Collaborate with the Market Operations team (Supply and Trading group) to oversee supply positions effectively.
  • Assist in Margin & Sales Objectives: Drive gross margin and sales goals while maintaining profitability for retail transactions.
  • Assist in Financial Forecasting: Prepare and maintain accurate forecasts in a timely manner for presentation to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in Financial Reporting: Ensure the delivery of accurate and timely financial information to LT to support critical business decisions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with various teams to ensure consistent and customer-focused pricing approaches.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferably in mathematics, engineering, or another quantitative field
  • MBA or CFA preferred

Minimum Requirements:

  • Advanced financial modelling skills including developing driver-based economic scenario modelling, NPV and ROE/ROI analysis.
  • Proficient Excel modeling skills and PowerPoint required
  • Proficiency in SQL database query and data management
  • Experience with data visualization software preferred
  • Experience and knowledge with quantitative modeling tools such as Python

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in financial analysis
  • Strong financial modelling including valuation modeling skills (DCF, ROI, etc.)
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and complete responsibilities with little supervision, yet work well in a team-oriented culture
  • Preferred experience with subscription-based businesses (retail energy, insurance, cable, internet, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Energy experience
  • Experience working in deregulated energy in Alberta

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities/Position requires employee to work using a laptop/computer screen.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid environment (office and home)
  • Some overtime required as special projects arise.
  • Some travel <10%
