ProTrans BC Operations Ltd., a subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis, is the private operator of the Canada Line, a 19-km automated rail-based rapid transit system connecting Downtown Vancouver with central Richmond and the Vancouver International Airport. Our fleet of trains provide a 26-minute terminus-to-terminus service to an average weekday ridership of more than 120,000 passengers across 16 stations. Our operations office is in Richmond, British Columbia.



The Control Room Operator (CRO) position reports directly to the Duty Manager and works in collaboration with a team of Operators. The CRO provides centralized information and assistance to Canada Line passengers and front-line staff from the Control Room via radio, phone, public address announcements and passenger information displays. They also liaise with emergency response agencies, when necessary, in response to emergencies or incidents on the Canada Line.

The CRO is responsible for monitoring power supply and distribution, incoming alarms, emergency telephone calls, fire detection system alarms/issues, and all communications to/from the Control Room, logging all pertinent information.

The CRO is trained in automatic train control operations, therefore occupying a safety critical role. They prioritize safety of the public and staff while ensuring on-time train service to meet a specified timetable.

There are 3 levels of training and qualification associated with the Control Room Operator position.

Safety critical position - This position is safety critical. Fitness for duty is a requirement of the position.

Your Role Within The Team

Level 1 cro - duties & essential job functions

  • Provide high quality passenger information via passenger information displays and public address announcements.
  • Respond to emergency calls generated from stations and trains.
  • Respond to passenger assistance and information requests from stations and trains.
  • Dispatch staff to assist passengers.
  • Answer incoming Fare Gate and Compass Card related calls from passengers.
  • Monitor and operate the CCTV system.
  • Review CCTV in response to guideway and walkway intrusion alarms identifying cause of the intrusion.
  • Monitor and operate the SCADA E&M systems at stations (escalators, elevators, station grilles).
  • Monitor and operate the Fare Gate system.
  • Contact and liaise with emergency response agencies including police, fire and ambulance.
  • Operate central emergency stop buttons when a trespasser is seen entering the guideway.
  • Answer general telephone calls to the Control Room and direct them to the appropriate workstation.
  • Maintain the technical knowledge necessary to execute all control functions that the operator has been trained in.
  • Maintain current and thorough knowledge of all Canada Line rules, bulletins, Control Room and work authorization procedures, and adhere to them.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by the Duty Manager.

Level 2 Cro - Duties & Essential Job Functions

  • Monitor and operate the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Computer (SCADA); remotely controlling the Canada Line propulsion and power distribution system.
  • De-energize the guideway in an emergency using traction power cutoff (TPC) and provide power isolation for guideway maintenance.
  • Energize the guideway following strict procedures as outlined in Canada Line rules and standard operating procedures.
  • Advise staff of emergencies or failures.
  • Operate central emergency stop buttons when a trespasser is seen entering the Guideway.
  • Maintain the Operations Log.
  • Monitor CCTV camera system status and respond to alarms associated with failures.
  • Monitor and respond to all incoming station and substation alarms and failures.
  • Answer incoming emergency telephone calls (ETEL).
  • Answer incoming general phone calls and direct them to the appropriate workstation.
  • Monitor and respond to all fire systems and failures.
  • Assist with announcements when necessary.
  • Assist all other workstations as required.
  • Maintain current and thorough knowledge of all Canada Line rules, bulletins, Control Room and work authorization procedures, and adhere to them.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by the Duty Manager.

Level 3 Cro - Duties & Essential Job Functions

  • Monitor, operate and control of all Automatic Train Control (ATC) trains in revenue service including direction and control during degraded operations, delays, and emergencies.
  • Oversight of radio system usage and protocol.
  • Dispatch appropriate staff to deal with system/train failures and emergencies.
  • Primary management of mainline or yard train movements during revenue service hours.
  • Fleet management, including provision of trains for maintenance and ensuring required numbers of trains are available for service.
  • Keep time intervals between trains (headways) balanced.
  • Implement and monitor automatic train schedules.
  • Control and implement special train service during special or abnormal events.
  • Respond to train alarms.
  • Control normal, abnormal, and emergency employee access to the guideway using ATC protection required by Canada Line rules and procedures.
  • Develop and implement service strategies to operate through and around emergencies or failures.
  • Execute emergency procedures for the ATC system when required.
  • Monitor and responding to two-way radio calls.
  • Monitor platform closed circuit television monitors and operate central emergency stop buttons when a trespasser is seen entering the Guideway.
  • Coordinate activities with other Control Room staff as required.
  • Maintain the technical knowledge necessary to execute all control functions.
  • Maintain current and thorough knowledge of all Canada Line rules, bulletins, Control Room and work authorization procedures, and adhere to them.
  • Assist with duties and responsibilities associated with any other workstations in emergency situations as required.
  • Ensure that all trains are washed, cleaned and prepared for revenue service.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by the Duty Manager.

Safety Responsibilities –

  • Ensure the Canada Line train operations are carried out safely and in compliance with standards.
  • Coordinate the site response to operational incidents and accidents.

Required –

  • Possess excellent numeric and language skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capable of learning and implementing operating rules and procedures for normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.
  • Ability to correctly analyze a situation and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to articulate clear public address announcements and radio calls.
  • Ability to pass a company aptitude test and medical; colour perception, visual acuity, hearing and impairment screening.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be available to work 7 days per week, including weekends and holidays on a 24-hour shift basis.

Preferred –

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Good verbal skills and working knowledge of a foreign language that is relevant to the area that the Canada Line operates in.
  • Previous exposure to a railway or rail based operations; supervision of a railway.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Radio and/or Public Address experience.
  • Computer skills – experience with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of other transport systems and the railways in the surrounding area.
  • Experience working in a control room or scheduling environment.
  • Experience working in a safety-critical environment.
  • Specific Control Room experience (e.g. SCADA/Comms, ERA environment).
  • Experience working shifts.
  • Previous education and leadership experience.
