Description

Based out of the Calgary office The Manager, System Planning and Reliability (the “Manager”) will report to the Director, Engineering, within the Pipeline Commercial and Execution team. The Manager oversees a team of hydraulic and reliability professionals supporting Inter Pipelines (IPL’s) pipeline assets, ensuring safe and reliable operations. As a key senior leader, the Manager will collaborate with various stakeholders responsible for facilitating IPL’s ambitious growth plans to prioritize activities and manage a team to support and trouble shoot operational challenges and provide proactive equipment reliability programs. To fulfil the responsibilities of the role, the Manager will work in close collaboration with Projects, Commercial, Oil Movements, Field Operations, Integrity Engineering and Operations Engineering.

Key Activities and Responsibilites


  • Provide pipeline hydraulic and reliability expertise to support the Transportation business unit as key point of contact for pipeline hydraulic and reliability problem solutioning and change management
  • Support Operations and Oil Movements stakeholders to deliver monthly nomination capacity data, define system DRA requirements, troubleshoot day to day operational challenges, and analyze capacity impacts related to pipeline integrity and / or emergency situations
  • Support pipeline system growth feasibility and expansion studies (internal and 3rd party), project concept development, and participate in idea generation of growth opportunities in collaboration with Commercial and Project teams
  • Own and ensure maintenance of IPL’s steady-state and transient pipeline hydraulic models
  • Maintain statistics on pipeline system capacities and utilization, using this data to regularly report on key metrics and to support identification of operational and growth opportunities and threats
  • Facilitate monthly Reliability Scorecard discussions with operations and drive identification of “bad actors” that contribute to unplanned downtime, providing support to stakeholders to address these issues
  • Perform Asset Criticality Assessments on pipeline systems to support Asset Management through Preventative Maintenance program optimization, condition-based monitoring, critical spare parts identification, and CMMS prioritization
  • Support warehousing of rotating equipment through defining preservation activities to retain operability of assets stored for long durations
  • Identify and develop tools to support Asset Management program, including downtime tracking and rotating equipment monitoring
  • Support and lead equipment failure investigation root cause analysis for critical assets
  • In collaboration with Field Operations, develop long term service plans for all pump station rotating equipment critical assets. Plan to include overhaul scopes, cost estimates, job plans, outside service plans, and schedules for major overhauls
  • Support pipeline O&M and capital Risk Based Budgeting process through identification of short and long-term activities to reduce risk and address aging infrastructure concerns
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of standards and procedures for hydraulics team and reliability programs
  • Mentor and coach members of the team by setting a positive tone for communication and collaboration within the department and with other departments
  • Implement an effective employee career development plan including annual goals and objectives, development of roles and responsibilities, training identification, and conducting annual performance and compensation reviews for all employees

Education, Skills And Experience


  • 15+ years of industry experience; direct experience in pipeline hydraulics, operations, and projects is essential, while knowledge of rotating equipment is an asset
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with hydraulic simulation models using Synergi Pipeline Simulator
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer
  • Strong leadership, organization, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience leading a team of professional engineers in the oil and gas industry
  • Knowledgeable in current operating standards, codes, rules and regulations that relate to pipeline operations and associated equipment
  • Experience with vibration analysis, condition based monitoring (or equivalent), asset criticality determination and CMMS data analysis considered an asset

Full time, permanent
