WHAT WILL YOU DO?

The Director, Risk & Derivatives will be responsible for overseeing Avenue Living’s risk exposure, implementing derivatives strategies, and ensuring regulatory compliance in financial transactions. The role requires a deep understanding of real estate markets, financial instruments, and risk management practices to optimize investment outcomes. The ideal candidate will provide leadership in risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting while integrating risk strategies and broader investment goals.

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive risk management framework aligned with investment objectives.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor risks related to interest rates, currency fluctuations, credit exposure, and liquidity.
  • Conduct stress testing, scenario analysis, and risk modeling to evaluate portfolio exposure.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks, internal policies, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to assess risks associated with derivative transactions and structured products.


Derivatives Strategy & Portfolio Management

  • Design and execute derivative strategies to hedge financial risks and enhance investment returns.
  • Oversee the use of swaps, options, futures, and forwards for risk mitigation and portfolio optimization.
  • Manage and evaluate real estate-related derivative products and foreign exchange hedging strategies.
  • Work closely with the capital markets team to integrate derivatives into broader investment and financing strategies.
  • Negotiate terms and execute transactions with counterparties, ensuring competitive pricing and efficient trade execution.


Investment Risk Oversight & Analytics

  • Monitor market trends, macroeconomic indicators, and emerging risks that may impact investment strategies.
  • Develop and implement quantitative models for risk assessment, including predictive modeling and advanced analytics.
  • Provide independent investment risk oversight, analyzing the risk-return trade-offs of potential investments.
  • Lead the development of key risk indicators (KRIs) and risk reporting dashboards.


Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership

  • Communicate risk insights and derivative strategy performance to senior management, investment committees, and the Board.
  • Build and maintain relationships with financial institutions, brokers, and regulatory bodies to facilitate derivative transactions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of risk professionals, fostering a culture of analytical excellence and strategic risk management.
  • Participate in investment and risk governance committees, contributing to the firm's overall strategic direction.


WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics or related field. A master’s degree and/or professional designation (CFA, CAIA, FRM, PRM) is highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of experience in risk management, derivatives trading, and investment risk strategies inclusive of foreign currency options, with a focus on real estate investments, alternative assets, or similar asset classes.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing risk models, financial derivatives, and hedging strategies with experience managing large and complex derivatives portfolios in real estate investment or development environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial modeling and risk analytics tools (eg. Bloomberg, Python, Excel, SQL).
  • Strong understanding of financial regulations across North America and compliance related to derivatives and risk management.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to present complex risk concepts to senior executives and influence cross-functional teams.
