Posting Overview

The Health & Safety Specialist, reporting directly to the Health & Safety Supervisor, will assist with the continued development, administration and maintenance of the Lambton Kent District School Board's Health and Safety Program to ensure a safe and healthy working and learning environment for staff, students and visitors. The Health & Safety Specialist will assist with the implementation of programs that will ensure that the LKDSB remains in compliance with all applicable H&S legislation, guidelines, and standards while ensuring all reasonable measures are taken to protect the health and well-being of staff, students and visitors. This will include investigating concerns and providing technical support in areas such as air quality, ergonomics, designated substances, water quality, workplace facilities conditions, construction, etc.

The Health & Safety Specialist will be required to work closely with other Departments, including Safe Schools, Building Services and Human Resources. They will be expected to provide support to all levels of staff, including school administrators, department managers and supervisors, and the LKDSBs joint health & safety committees.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline;
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or eligibility to obtain the CRSP. CRSTs working towards the CRSP will be considered;
  • A minimum of four (4) years of work experience directly related to Health & Safety;
  • Thorough working knowledge of all legislation and standards pertaining to Health and Safety including, but not limited to, Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Safe Drinking Water Act & Ontario Regulation 213/07, Ontario Fire Code, Building Code, applicable CSA Standards, and how they apply to the Education Sector.

Other Key Skills & Knowledge:

  • Effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills and the ability to work with staff at all levels, union members and Joint Health and Safety Committees;
  • Experience working in the education sector, or the broader pubic sector is an asset;
  • Experience working in a multi-union environment;
  • Experience interacting with government officials (i.e. Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development; Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks; and Public Health, etc.);
  • Experience in responding to concerns and developing solutions;
  • A confident self-starter who uses their initiative to resolve complex problems;
  • Problem solving, and conflict management skills are considered an asset;
  • Ability to travel between schools and other LKDSB Facilities;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Health & Safety Supervisor.

Position Effective Date & Length:

Non-union, Permanent, 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day

Located at the Sarnia Education Centre

Level 4 - $86,732 - $96,369/annum
