Overview
Game mathematicians are responsible for developing and coding math game logic for game project initiatives. Projects may include new game creation or adapt game math logic to assigned market for conversions. Game math logic must ultimately conform to quality, regulatory, and jurisdictional requirements in addition to the overall design vision for the game, set by the Producer. This role works on a cross-functional game development team including Producers, Project Managers, Graphic Artists, Mathematicians, Software Developers, Technical Artists, Test Engineers, and, occasionally, 3rd party contractors. The types of products this role may support include core product lines, class II slot, class III slot, keno, poker, electronic table games, and VLT, depending on the Studio’s product mix and project assignments. Game mathematicians may also be expected to calculate and simulate the expected payout of games and collaborate with other Mathematicians, Software Developers, Test Engineers, and Producers to identify sources of deviations in payout results. Central to the position is the candidate’s ability to build collaborative relationships and drive results.
Responsibilities
Develop and write game math logic including coding integration into math engine with oversight.
Adapt game logic to assigned market for conversions by collaboration with origination mathematician and/or review of original game math logic.
Thoroughly document game math logic and maintain in designated location throughout the game development process.
Contribute to the independent game verification or peer review processes including calculation programs or simulations to verify accuracy of game logic.
Communicate the game math logic to the quality engineer team prior to internal QA validation by hand-off meetings and documentation/reports.
Data analytics through use of statistical tools and techniques to analyze field data, identify optimal game features, and leverage process control.
Field and address customer requests and concerns related to game function and math logic.
Seek out support, feedback, best practices, and market insights from mathematician team members and others involved in the game development process.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or Computer science (or equivalent math-oriented degree with strong mathematical skills).
Expertise in Combinatorics, Probability Theory, and Statistics.
Prior experience with data analytics, visualizations of data, and/or proficiency in excel.
Fluency in a programming language (e.g., python, C++, C#, VBA, etc.) and aptitude willingness to learn advanced programming techniques.
Detail-oriented and can prioritize and work on multiple projects at a time.
Must be able to work interdependently in collaborative team environment.
Must be able to clearly explain and present technical and non-technical ideas.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in mathematics or equivalent degree.
1-4 years leveraging applied math techniques or design and development of game math.
Background in advanced probability theory, dynamical systems, dynamic programming, graph theory, or game theory.
Extensive experience with mathematical model building.
Ability to build and maintain working relationships.
Keys to Success
All IGT employees have a role in information security. Annual training will be assigned and required as appropriate.
