Job Description

As a Vegetation Ecologist, you will play an important role on a team providing: landscape, soil, and vegetation field assessments; reclamation and closure planning; and construction, post-construction, and closure monitoring.

You will work closely with team members across multiple technical disciplines on proposal development, project reclamation scope design, reclamation work coordination, mentorship and leadership of our junior team members, report writing, and client communications.

We’ll look to you to contribute your knowledge of reclamation in the project life cycle, applicable municipal, provincial, and federal regulatory frameworks, and strategies for optimizing reclamation program efficiencies and success.

In addition, you will identify opportunities for business development initiatives through discussions with clients and colleagues within a wide range of business sectors that may include energy, power, mining, infrastructure, and government.

Key Responsibilities

You will also:


  • Establish strategic relationships with SLR personnel in various disciplines to identify in-house resources and opportunities to educate disciplines on available SLR reclamation services.
  • Participate in the development of proposals and budgets with the goal of ensuring projects are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Participate in and contribute to discussions pertaining to test plot study design, QA/QC and advisory services, specialized field surveys and review of technical reports, and federal, provincial and/or municipal permits, licenses, and applications.
  • Provide technical mentorship to other staff members.
  • Participate nationally with the Ecology team and other technical disciplines throughout our Canadian operations.

Qualifications


  • Degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in Reclamation or Soils or Plant Science along with practical soil management and revegetation experience obtained through; lifestyle activities (farming, gardening, plant propagation); or Technical Diploma field lab experience; or construction environmental inspection; or field test plot research activities; or academic instruction; and a professional designation.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience working in the environmental industry through consulting, environmental inspection, research, or instruction.
  • Ability to identify business opportunities and have an excellent approach to client service.
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting and authorization processes related to Canadian federal, provincial, and regional legislation and policies.
  • Knowledge of natural resource assessments and inventories, federally and provincially regulated environmental assessments, writing, and administering mitigation plans and obtaining approvals.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislative frameworks and resources (e.g., Wildlife Act, Water Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act).
  • Ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams
