This role provides technical support across various departments: field operations, research, aerial treatment programs, and wildfire response. Technicians may be deployed to various locations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland for assignments up to 6 weeks in duration. 


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect and process samples related to spruce budworm research
  • Navigate woods roads with GPS or navigational tools and conduct site assessments
  • Record, enter, and validate environmental data in line with FPL’s standards
  • Assist with setup and takedown of aircraft loading systems and equipment
  • Operate small equipment such as pumps and generators around aircraft
  • Treatment block signage, identification, and site preparation
  • Support aerial mission planning by preparing mission sheets, itineraries, and data files for pilots
  • Work with proprietary and ArcGIS-based software to create map series and mission plans
  • Assist with the safe and efficient loading of air tanker aircraft for wildfire suppression
  • Set up and maintain fire loading equipment, including pumps, hoses, valves, and generators
  • Support fire response operations and adhere to alert levels as directed by the Wildfire Management Branch
  • Maintain readiness for emergency fire response on high-risk days
  • Perform other tasks as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with GIS software, data processing, and ArcGIS Online/Pro
  • Knowledge or experience with small equipment (gas-powered pumps, generators, etc.)
  • Familiarity with sample collection, forestry, aviation, or environmental sciences
  • Bilingualism (English and French)
  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain a pesticide license (FPL will provide training as needed)
  • Special consideration for students in forestry, aviation, survey/GIS, biosciences, or related fields

 

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent within NB)
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada, with the ability to obtain a security clearance and criminal record check
  • Functional written and verbal communication in English
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general computer skills
  • Ability to provide CSA-approved safety footwear (other safety gear provided by FPL)
  • Comfortable working in remote locations for extended periods with limited or no cellular reception
  • Flexibility with work arrangements on low fire hazard days
