Job Description

Summary Statement:

The Automation Engineering Technician position is a critical role that impacts the operational performance and efficiency of the business. As an Automation Engineering Technician, you will work across all locations to ensure that the equipment is running in the most safe and efficient manner to meet customer needs and expectations. Working closely with the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for assisting in installation of new machinery, troubleshooting and maintaining existing equipment and automation systems, identifying areas of potential improvement, and collaborating with branch managers and warehouse personnel to ensure the highest levels of safety and efficiency in our operations.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

Health and Safety

  • Help ensure company complies with all corporate and local Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements as it pertains to equipment design
  • Constantly consider safety when installing equipment, ensuring that designs and installations meet or exceed legislative requirements
  • Lead by example in all interactions with Ideal staff and customers
  • Help foster an environment based on results achieved in the safest manner possible

Installation, Testing, and Calibration

  • Assist in the installation of new equipment and systems by understanding and following circuit diagrams, manuals, and engineering instructions to ensure safe and proper operation of equipment.
  • Build and wire industrial control cabinetry according to engineer’s instructions and circuit diagram.
  • Setup auxiliary electrical and machine systems including motors, sensors, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and mechanical systems.
  • Calibrate and commission new equipment with support from engineering team
  • Assist in operator training of new and existing equipment
  • Be an ambassador for continuous improvement by demonstrating your passion for, and communicating Ideal’s vision around continuous improvement in all products, plants, and processes

Simple System Design and Problem Solving

  • Design simple control systems to improve operational efficiency including simple PLC programming, control system design for small projects, and assist in electronic component specification with support from the engineering team.
  • Use existing R&D equipment such as 3D printers, welders, and other fabrication equipment to make parts or mechanical components for use in machine systems or processes.
  • Identify potential problems in existing equipment and suggest solutions/upgrades to improve operational efficiency of equipment
  • Prepare simple documentation for machinery such as wiring diagrams, operation/maintenance manuals, troubleshooting tips, etc. for new and existing equipment

Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair

  • Identify broken/damages components and equipment in machine systems including electrical, control, mechanical, and computer systems
  • Replace broken or worn components in all machine systems including electrical, control, mechanical, and computer systems
  • Use various testing devices to diagnose and resolve problems with control systems and machinery
  • Identify and investigate potential failure points for equipment that is operating abnormally or ineffectively
  • Document data, results, and observations from maintenance activities
  • Educate operations team on potentially dangerous failure points
  • With support from the engineering team, educate operations team on actions to take with failed equipment and be available to repair in a timely manner
  • Assist maintenance teams with preventive maintenance (when time permits)
