NextStar Energy (NSE) is a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis. NextStar Energy will be Canada's first large-scale lithium-ion battery production plant when it begin production at the site on over 200-acres of land on Twin Oaks Drive near Banwell Road.

The manufacturing facility is targeted to have an annual production capacity in excess of 49 gigawatt hours and will create an estimated 2,500 new jobs in Windsor and the surrounding areas.


We are currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Manager (Part Leader) to join our Environmental Health & Safety team.


As the Environmental Lead, your expertise in Municipal, Provincial (Ontario), and Federal Environmental regulations & requirements, their applicability, program building & implementation, and process improvement will contribute significantly to the overall success of NextStar Energy.


What your role will look like:


  • Lead team of multidisciplinary professionals in achieving operational needs and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, EMS ISO14001 system and corporate programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including wastewater ECA, air (EASR permit compliance), chemical and waste management.
  • Manage environmental reports, permit applications, inventories, and surveys. This includes: data acquisition, documentation, record-keeping, monitoring, reviews, and approvals.
  • Lead chemical and hazardous material data base management, review regulatory requirements and approve use of new incoming materials, ensure SDS compliance and availability.
  • Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of all pollution control devices to meet regulatory requirements and maintain environmental compliance.
  • Ensure implementation of Total Waste Management program for the facility.
  • Manage waste contractors and service contracts in collaboration with the purchasing department to ensure proper handling, disposal and record keeping for disposed waste materials.
  • Manage operations of onsite processes related to centralized waste storage, and electrical scrap discharging/scrap management.
  • Plan and monitor OPEX/CAPEX for Environmental Part and lead execution of capital projects.
  • Utilize problem-solving methodologies to lead projects that enhance environmental compliance and performance. Implement programs to improve environmental performance, engaging and involving Team Leaders in the process.
  • Provide environmental expertise and support to plant leadership, coordinating communication of regulatory inspection activities. Collaborate with other groups and consultants as needed to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Analyze environmental incidents, internal and external environmental audit findings, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions. Communicate findings and recommendations to plant leadership and corporate environmental staff.
  • Lead ESG reporting, Net Zero Challenge and decarbonization efforts.
  • Represent facility in environmental and sustainability matters through interaction and collaboration with regulatory departments and external and internal stakeholders.
  • Make decisions with respect to hiring, monitor and evaluate employee performance and discipline.
  • Other responsibilities as requested by EHS Lead.


Required qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Engineering, Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of Environmental, Engineering, or related experience preferably in manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and requirements.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with both internal and external parties and regulatory agencies.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Automotive, chemical, or manufacturing experience.
  • Managing internal Environmental personnel, and external contractor partners.
  • Environmental regulations including air, waste, noise, stormwater, and spill response.
  • Manufacturing experience.
  • Sustainability experience.
  • Programs evaluation and building.
  • ISO 14001 implementation and maintenance.
