Role description:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Telecommunications Designer I to join our team. This role focuses on the design, implementation, and maintenance of fiber optic networks, including Fiber to the Premise (FTTP), linear transport networks, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Communication Systems. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate of engineering who has had moderate exposure to telecommunications design software, an ability to research and understand of industry standards, and the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.

Role accountabilities:

  • Data Preparation and Analysis: Collect, prepare, and analyze GIS data to support the design of fiber optic networks, including Fiber to the Premise (FTTP), linear transport networks, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Maintain accurate and detailed records of project data in GIS platforms such as QGIS and COMSOF AutoDesigner, including source tracking, version management, and file storage and archival to support project teams.
  • Support for Telecommunications Design: Assist in the creation of conceptual and preliminary designs for fiber optic networks under the supervision of senior team members. Conduct quality checks on GIS data to ensure accuracy and compliance with design requirements. Routing, element placement, cable and splicing connections and validation of source data against design results.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with internal team members, external design partners, clients, and stakeholders to ensure designs meet project requirements and client expectations.
  • Site Surveys and Assessments: Conduct site surveys, inspections, and assessments to gather information and validate design feasibility. Perform post-construction quality assurance to ensure compliance with designs and standards.
  • Compliance with Industry Standards: Ensure designs align with industry standards, including ANSI/TIA, BICSI, NEC, and other relevant codes and regulations.
  • Vendor and Contractor Coordination: Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure equipment and materials meet design specifications.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Support telecommunications systems through our managed service portfolio, including preventative maintenance, emergency response, troubleshooting, and underground locate programs.
  • Cost Estimation and Budgeting: Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and proposals for telecommunications projects.
  • Technology and Trends: Stay updated on emerging telecommunications technologies and trends to ensure designs are forward-looking and innovative.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education and Certifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
    • BICSI OSP or RCDD credentials in combination with 5+ years of field experience will be considered.
  • Skills and Experience:
    • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., QGIS, COMSOF AutoDesigner) and familiarity with design tools like AutoCAD or Revit.
    • Basic understanding of fiber optic network design and implementation, including FTTP, linear transport networks, and ITS.
    • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations such as ANSI/TIA, BICSI, NEC, etc.
    • Experience conducting site surveys, inspections, and post-construction quality assurance.
    • Excellent collaboration and communication skills to engage with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.
    • Understanding of operations of fiber optic networks including ability to troubleshoot and maintain telecommunications systems an asset.
    • Experience in cost estimation, budgeting, and preparing project proposals an asset.

The salary range for this position is $54,000-84,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
