Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in assigned areas.

Characteristic Job Duties

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Clean assigned areas such as, but not limited to, windows/sills, baseboards, desks, tables, chairs, walls, all floors and rugs, beds, stairs, and washroom utilities.
  • Clean dormitory daily – change bedding as required. Dry/wet mop floors as required.
  • Clean private rooms as per weekly schedule.
  • Laundry duties: DO NOT MIX RESIDENTS LAUNDRY. Fold and return to bag; do laundry for the Centre – sheets, pillow cases, and towels.
  • Clean front entrance daily.
  • Use cleaning supplies wisely – DO NOT WASTE.
  • Use all supplies and materials safely, and perform all duties in a safe manner.
  • After each shift, return any equipment used and wash and hang up mops.
  • Be polite and courteous to residents, but do not fraternize.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Minimum Education Level Attained

The successful job applicant will have

Qualifications (Minimum)

  • Grade 12 graduate
  • Minimum of 2 years housekeeping or related experience

Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements

  • Possess valid First Aid/CPR certification (preferred)
  • Knowledge of chemicals (WHIMIS training)
  • Able to understand oral and written communication well
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Physically capable of completing all tasks
  • Neat in appearance and bondable.

Minimum Prior Related Experience

The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:

More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including life skills, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures.

Physical Effort/Dexterity Required

The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping and sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.

The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.

Concentration Required

The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Adhere to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of the Centre and of The Salvation Army
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training
  • Engage in regular meetings with your Supervisor at mutually determined intervals
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with your Supervisor at six and twelve months in the first year of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Read, follow, and suggest improvements to the Centre Policy and Procedures Manual
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner.
  • Maintain resident, staff, and The Salvation Army Waterston Centre confidentiality.

Work Environment

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and surrounding property designated.

The Incumbent Will Work Under The Following Disagreeable Conditions

  • Handle garbage
  • Isolation and monotony
  • Odours
  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Various weather conditions
  • Washrooms (i.e. human waste)

The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

Exposure To Hazards

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals (e.g. toxic spills)
  • Moving objects
  • Sharp objects (e.g. needle pricks)
  • Electrical hazards
  • Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back, wrist)

Precautionary Measures

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Use gloves
  • Use ear/eye protection (goggles)
  • Eye wash stations
  • Use fume masks where appropriate
  • Use steel toe boots

This is a casual position

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $16.97 to $17.92 with a maximum of $18.86.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
