Job Overview

A hands-on Database Administrator who thrives in a dynamic work environment. This role is responsible to provide 24 X 7 database and BI platforms support by working with other database service team members, BI team members, and other crossing functioning IT team members to ensure high security, high availability, high performance Pet Valu databases, BI platforms/tools, including but not limited to on-prime and cloud-based SQL server, Oracle, MySQL, Snowflake, Talend, Azure Fabric, AIS, Tableau, PowerBI, and other databases, BI platforms/tools. This role is accountable for daily database and BI operations to ensure the performance, security, availability of databases and the successful execution of BI ETL processes, automated reports meet agreed SLAs. This role will need to proactively review database system and BI platform performance statistics, altering messages, and resolving the issues in timely manner. This role will also involve into variety of Pet Valu IT projects to design and implement database solutions based on project requirements.

Essential Duties

  • Be accountable on daily database operations to ensure databases meet compliance, security, performance, availability requirements.
  • Be accountable on monitoring/performance tuning daily BI ETL operations, automated reports to ensure BI operations meet agreed SLAs.
  • Working with other team members and BI team members, provide 24 X 7 database and BI platform support.
  • Troubleshoot/resolving database/BI issues in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate, support other IT departments and business partners on database development requests.
  • Involving into different IT projects to design/implement database solutions to project teams.
  • Complete the assigned task on time while ensuring enterprise development standards and quality, security, service requirements are met.
  • Gain/improving skills and knowledge on Pet Valu database and BI platforms, such as Azure Fabric, Power BI, Snowflake, Talend, Tableau, SQL, Oracle, MySQL, … etc, and any other future platforms through work, self-study, and learning from others.
  • Develop and support Pet Valu database platforms (SQL server, Oracle, Snowflake) and any potential cloud-based data platforms in future.
  • Rotated 24/7 oncall support.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications

  • At least 3 years of database administrator experience.
  • Bachelors or master’s in computer science or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience building and maintaining production and nonproduction database environments, including but not limited to on-prime and cloud-based SQL Server, Oracle databases.
  • Experience with 24 X 7 IT support.
  • Understand ITIL standards and processes.
  • Ability to self-start, eager to learn.
  • Strong understanding of database management systems (e.g. SQL, Oracle, Snowflake)
  • Knowledgeable with Agile software development methodologies, source control, and automated testing and deployment
  • Knowledgeable with deploying and managing in-house/cloud-hosted application services
  • Experience with multiple Source/Version control systems and understanding of code merging concepts.
  • Knowledge with BI data platform and ETL/data integration tools, such as Snowflake, Tableau, PowerBI, Talend, Working with high performing technology teams.
  • Knowledge and experience with data modeling and data warehousing
  • Understanding of modern data architecture, such as data mesh, data fabric, data lake, … etc.
  • Collaborate with the Business Analysts in requirements gathering, prototyping and requirements validation. Analyze and verify technical requirements for completeness, consistency, feasibility, and testability.
  • Resolving technical issues through debugging & investigation
  • Knowledge about Retail systems including point-of-sales, warehousing / distribution, and merchandising systems.
