Title: Social Worker - es zúmin’ Primary Care Centre
Salary: $70,933 - $85,350 per year (pay range explained below)
Contract: This position is a 2-year term with the FNHA. When the term position ends with the FNHA, it is intended that this position will be offered as a permanent role with the es zúmin’ Primary Care Clinic.
Hours: Standard Hours - 37.5 hours per week
Location: Mount Currie, BC, with frequent travel to the Southern Stl'atl'imx communities, which are up to 3 hours away by road.
Bargaining Unit: PIPSC BCFNHA Group (Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada)
FNPCI Initiative
The First Nations-led Primary Care Initiative (FNPCI) aims to improve access to primary health-care services for First Nations people across BC in a way that is culturally safe and closer to home. The FNPCI is part of the province’s primary care strategy, which is integrating team-based care in communities throughout B.C. and changing the way primary care is delivered with the creation of primary care networks in partnership with the Regional Health Authorities.
In order to meet the health and wellness needs of First Nations people, it is very important that primary care is culturally safe and culturally informed where Indigenous ways of knowing and being are woven into services.
One of the main objectives of the FNPCI is to develop new First Nations Primary Health Care Centers in rural and urban locations across the province. The centers will provide access to culturally safe, quality primary health care services for First Nations people and their families. The aim is for clients to feel safe, welcomed, valued, respected and heard when they access care services at one of these centers.
About The Centre
The es zúmin’ Primary Care Centre (PCC) provides culturally safe, trauma-informed primary care services to the Líl?wat, N’Quatqua, Samahquam, Skatin and Xa’xtsa First Nations communities. es zúmin’ means “to care for”, and the es zúmin’ PCC is a place to provide holistic care for people, incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and being in all our services. Located in the Líl’wat Health Pqusnalhcw Health Centre (11092 Blackbear Road, Mt. Currie) and the Southern Stl’atl’imx Health Society (SSHS) main building (321 IR10 Road Road, Mt. Currie), and with mobile clinics providing services in N’Quatqua, Samahquam, Skatin, and Xa’xtsa, the es zúmin’ PCC provides a safe space for First Nations people and their families to seek high-quality primary care services.
Working at the es zúmin’ PCC is guided by the foundational Vision and Seven Directives of the FNHA, emphasizing care, respect, and excellence in serving First Nations communities. The centre champions wellness and seizes the unique opportunity to drive transformative changes in First Nations health and wellness. About The Role
The Social Worker works in a multi-disciplinary setting and is a valuable partner to all communities of the Southern Stl’atl’imx sub-region of the First Nations Health Authority.
This position provides capacity building services for the communities while working effectively with other members of the team to provide support, guidance, and coordinative capacity all the while approaching the community work from an empowering and supportive practice perspective. The Social Worker practices from an Indigenous worldview that recognizes and respects the values, beliefs and customs of individuals, families and communities as well as adhering to best practices current to the field. This position focuses on the development and coordination of community-based services as requested by the community and the partners engaged. The position also provides consultation to Nation-based leadership, Health Leads, and partners regarding information and referral to external resources, navigation of relevant systems and partners as well as implementation of relevant internal resources (ie: IH/FNHA Joint Crisis Response Protocol).

About You
Education
- Master’s degree in Social Work plus 5 to 7 years of recent, related experience in health care setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Advanced training in threat/risk assessment and/or trauma response
- Occupational Certification
- Current registration with BC College of Social Worker as a Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW)
- Current valid B.C. driver’s license and willing to submit a drivers abstract
- Knowledge of various meeting and coordination modalities
- Knowledge of assessment and screening tools and modalities in determining suicide and violence risk and threat
- Knowledge of relevant socio-historical events relevant to First Nations in Canada
- Knowledge of the importance of critical reflection in practice
- Familiarity with traditional healing practices, customs, values and traditions of local First Nations
- Excellent communication skill
- Cultural safety and agility
- Actively uses critical self-reflection in practice
- An understanding of rural and remote communities and their inherent challenges and barriers
- Adheres to a Nation based, community driven philosophy
- Practices from an individual/family/community perspective
- Balances western and traditional Indigenous worldviews in practice
- Aware of and applies professional ethics and approaches to resolve ethical dilemmas
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of allied professionals, formal and informal community leaders, and knowledge keepers and/or Elders.
