Area Counsellor - Elementary

Area Counsellors in the Richmond School District will work in a proactive manner with K-7 students and their families to support success in student academic and social emotional development and will have a knowledge of, and ability to access, outside agency support. The applicant must also be able to articulate strategies for dealing with a diverse set of students with varying learner profiles and be able to work closely with administrators and resource teachers to ensure that appropriate support structures are in place. Support of the District's various initiatives and directions (PBIS, erase , SOGI, Mindfulness, EASE, etc.) is expected.

The successful candidate must possess current academic and professional preparation in counselling as outlined in the RTA Collective Agreement, Section D, Article 21 (a professional teaching certificate and preferably a Masters degree in counselling psychology or equivalent, and a minimum of five years classroom teaching experience is required preferably at the elementary level for area counsellors).

The candidate will have demonstrated ability and experience with personal and group counselling, working with student and parent groups, liaising with school, district and community support systems, providing peer mediation and conflict resolution. Demonstrated ability and experience in working with pre-adolescent issues, personal issues and family issues are necessary for this position. Required knowledge and skills include the ability to provide counselling service to students within the school setting, provide collaborative consultation to teachers, parents and administrators, assist in the coordination of services as a member of a school-based team and support liaison with other agencies and settings.Must be capable of working both independently and in a collaborative team environment in the context of the Richmond School District Learning Services Department and with school personnel.
