About Us
The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of seven Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), large interdisciplinary graduate programs in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and Advanced Health Care Practice and five Research Centres. The Faculty has more than 4,000 undergraduate students and more than 900 graduate students.
Responsibilities
The Communications Coordinator will coordinate and support the communications and marketing efforts of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), with an overall goal of enhancing the reputation of FHS as it relates to research, academic programs, student recruitment and community/alumni engagement. With a high level of skill in leveraging digital technologies, the Communications Coordinator will support the development and implementation of strategic communication plans and related projects, create content for use across a variety of channels, develop and maintain the Faculty’s digital properties (websites, social media, newsletters). The Communications Coordinator will ensure branding consistency in order to promote and market scholarship, research and programming across the Faculty and in a manner that is consistent with all of Western’s applicable guidelines.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Marketing, or Related Program
- International Association of Business Communicators Designation completed or in progress is preferred
Experience:
- 3 years experience in communications and/or marketing, with an emphasis on digital communications, graphic design, photography, website content updates using a content management system and videography
- Experience in a post-secondary environment is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with e-communication tools including website and graphic design principles and with social media platforms relevant to student populations
- Knowledge of theory and best practices in strategic communications and marketing
- Strong understanding of audience segmentation as it relates to communications and marketing
- Familiarity with principles of writing, including grammar and style, argument, and coherence
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
- Ability to create and modify written and visual content for use across a variety of platforms
- Communication skills to engage audiences, with confidence interacting with individuals at all levels of an organization
- Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
- Attention to detail and proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
- Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Intermediate graphic design and video editing skills (Adobe Creative Suite)
- Strong communication skills to write clearly, and adapt communication style and content for intended audiences in a professional manner
- Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management systems (e.g. Campaign Monitor)
- Experience using Web-based content management systems (e.g. Cascade) preferred
- Interpersonal skills to liaise with prospective and current students, staff, faculty and other members of the Western community
- Ability and propensity to use judgment and re-evaluate decisions when presented with new information
- Multi-tasking skills to prioritize and consistently produce high-quality work within deadlines
- Proven ability to build both formal and informal professional relationships within, across, and external to organizational boundaries
- Team player with the ability to work collaboratively and actively contribute in meetings and in team settings Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
