Contract type: Full time

The OHRI has an opening for a full-time Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Ehsan Habibi located at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate with expertise in genome engineering, including molecular cloning, CRISPR-based editing, and viral vector production (lentivirus, AAV), particularly in mammalian systems. The candidate will play a key role in building genetically modified cell lines to enable controlled self-organization in stem cell-based models. In addition to these specialized skills, the candidate will also be responsible for standard lab duties, such as ordering supplies, maintaining lab records, preparing reagents, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. Working within a collaborative and inclusive team environment, the candidate will also contribute to experimental workflows involving stem cell and embryo culture and differentiation, advanced imaging, and single-cell and spatial omics. This is an ideal role for someone looking to apply their technical expertise while playing a central role in the operation and growth of a cutting-edge developmental systems biology lab.

Basic Requirements (Education/Experience):
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Regenerative Medicine, or a closely related field;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proven excellence in interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and record-keeping skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve technical challenges independently.
Technical experience and Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Mammalian cell culture and tissue culture.
  • Design and construction of plasmids for CRISPR, overexpression, and reporter assays.
  • Perform high-efficiency cloning (e.g., Golden Gate, Gibson, restriction-ligation).
  • Establish stable cell lines and validate genome edits using PCR, sequencing, and imaging.
  • Flow cytometry and quantitative analysis (e.g., FlowJo software).
  • RT-qPCR and quantitative gene expression analysis.
  • Animal handling, surgical procedures, and tissue dissection.
  • Support daily lab operations including ordering supplies, reagent preparation, and inventory management.
  • Maintain accurate lab and data records.
  • Report to the principal investigator/Scientist.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with relevant work experience is preferred.
  • Immunofluorescence microscopy / Histology including preparation, imaging, and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience with embryonic stem cells, organoid models, or developmental systems.
  • Familiarity with next generation sequencing, transcriptomics, single-cell genomics, or advanced imaging platforms
