The Social Science Technology Services (SSTS) department delivers the best technology services and support to faculty, staff, and students in the Faculty of Social Science in a helpful and friendly manner. We will do our part to contribute to “the best student experience” and to support the faculty to fulfill the research and teaching mission of the University.
Responsibilities
The Media Technician supports the Social Science Technology Services (SSTS) team and the Faculty of Social Science by providing expertise in graphic design, digital video editing, image editing, wide-format poster printing, and media production. The Media Technician will assist undergraduate and graduate students to operate various equipment and software, will maintain and purchase media-related supplies and coordinate card access. The Media Technician will be responsible for configuring, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware, and software related to media technologies, provide audio-visual support for live recorded and livestreamed events, engineer audio projects in the podcasting studio and administer classroom, computer lab and recording studio technologies. The Media Technician will prepare and deliver workshops on media technology, develop instructional materials, and offer guidance to faculty, staff, and students on integrating media into classrooms, meetings and presentations.
The Media Technician is the main shipper/receiver of all departmental courier shipments departing/arriving at the Social Science loading dock and also provides backup support for the main office, including exam scanning and answering phones.
Qualifications
Education:
- 3 year Community College Diploma in Multimedia Design, Media Production, graphic design, or a related field
- Undergraduate degree in a related field is preferred
Experience:
- 2 years of experience providing technical and non-technical support in multimedia design, with a customer service focus
- Preferred:
- Experience with graphic design, video editing, and media equipment
- Experience with large format printers
- Experience in knowledge exchange and/or working with knowledge users/partners from different sectors
- Experience managing and maintaining a large equipment inventory
- Experience working in an educational environment with a demonstrated history of collaboration with faculty and working alongside students
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with Social Science education, programs, and academic policies and procedures would be an asset
- Familiarity with shipping/receiving processes
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite; sound knowledge of Apple and Windows operating systems
- Knowledge and experience using various Multimedia applications including Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, Wondershare, Filmora, Canva; video editing skills
- Knowledge of graphic design principles
- Demonstrated technical proficiency to test and repair technical apparatus
- Verbal and written communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Ability to apply active listening to hear and understand the complete message being communicated
- Ability to apply creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness to daily work
- Ability to establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
