Maintenance and Engineering Manager

The Maintenance and Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance and engineering operations within a steel manufacturing environment. This role ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of all equipment critical to our steel-making process.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Maintenance and Engineering Manager’s duties & responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive maintenance and engineering program based on industry best practices, with an emphasis on equipment reliability and preventive/predictive maintenance
  • Leads maintenance and engineering planning and scheduling of critical assets, coordinating budgets, timelines, and resources in alignment with organizational objectives
  • Oversees inventory and procurement of maintenance supplies, equipment, and spare components in order to minimize unplanned downtime
  • Supervises and communicates regularly with the maintenance and engineering team to ensure effective workflow, rapid response to equipment breakdowns, and continuous process improvement
  • Ensures maintenance and engineering personnel are certified, trained, and equipped to work safely and efficiently in a high-pressure environment
  • Participates in the hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of maintenance and engineering personnel, including tradespeople, and conducts performance evaluations based on job performance
  • Maintains and updates SOPs and training materials, and ensures accurate documentation including technical drawings, project records, and maintenance plans
  • Monitors, tracks, and reports maintenance and engineering metrics
  • Oversees and enforces safety procedures, lockout/tagout program, and regulatory compliance specific to a steel manufacturing environment
  • Coordinates and communicates closely with other areas including Operations, Environmental, and Facilities to align maintenance work and engineering solutions with production schedules and plant initiatives
  • Serves as the primary technical advisor on maintenance and engineering matters and represents the Department in cross-functional meetings and decision-making processes
  • Leads and supports capital projects and upgrades as needed
  • Ensures compliance with all legislated and company safety policies and procedures. Ensures all regulations and standards relating to the Maintenance and Engineering Department are met at all times
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance, reduce costs, and support manufacturing practices
  • Performs all other duties required to support plant performance and reliability

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum five years of maintenance and/or engineering experience in a heavy manufacturing environment is preferred
  • Previous managerial experience with a team of skilled trades in a unionized environment would be considered an asset
  • Comfortable with working at heights, operating basic tools/machinery, and working directly in the field
  • Experience and proficiency with basic office computer software and computer maintenance management system (CMMS) and ERP software such as Oracle
  • Strong organizational, leadership and planning skills. Demonstrates the ability to manage time and schedule work effectively and efficiently
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to analyze problems, delegate and collaborate within a team environment
  • A strong willingness to work in a fast-paced, lean environment where adaptability, innovation and hard work are valued above all else
