Research Manager - Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC)

Location: Stratford, London (High flex - we'd expect you to be in the office 1 to 2 days a week)

Reports to: ECMC Translational Research Lead

Directorate: Research & Innovation

Hours / Contract: Permanent, 35 hours per week (flexible working requests will be considered)

Salary: £37,000 - £41,000 pa per annum (depending on experience) plus benefits

About The Team

The Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) Network is a UK wide network of centres that conduct early phase trials and associated translational research. The Programme Office is housed by CRUK and supports the network in a variety of ways. You can learn more about the network and the Programme Office here

The ECMC network is made up of 17 adult centres and 12 paediatric locations across the UK. Each ECMC has unique and world leading expertise within early phase clinical research. Collaboration across the ECMC network gives us the edge in generating new treatments for cancer.

What will you be doing?

The ECMC Research Manager will play a key role in facilitating the delivery of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) network's strategic objective to accelerate translational research across the Adult and Paediatric ECMCs.

Key duties include:


  • Provide project management support to activities within the translational research strategic objective, including development of networking events and workshops
  • Monitor project milestones, dependencies and risks, escalating issues to the Translational Research Lead
  • Develop and implement effective processes for managing new project proposals coming to the Translational Research Forum from both academic groups and/or commercial entities.
  • Build strong working relationships with key stakeholders within the ECMC network to support collaboration across specialisms e.g. working with the Haematology Network Group and solid tumour clinical leads.
  • Support the Industry Engagement team with knowledge of the network's scientific capabilities where needed, working with partners to bring translational research projects to the ECMC network.
  • Engage with other national and international infrastructure to promote collaborative working on translational research in the experimental oncology space.
  • Manage the delivery of, and act as secretariat for the scientific-themed network groups and forums (e.g. UKTCPN and the ECMC Translational Research Forum); organising meetings, preparing agendas and minutes.
  • Use your scientific knowledge to highlight case studies of particular interest to the ECMC Impact and Engagement Lead and to support development of translational research focused impact comms.
  • Coordinate the review and signature of the ECMC collaboration agreement, working with the Project Manager and legal teams across the network.
  • Coordinate a robust annual reporting process for the Adult ECMCs and the ECMC Paediatric Network to ensure that each ECMC is delivering against their strategic aims.
  • Provide grants management support to ECMCs, answering queries about their awards and working with the Research Operations team to ensure that their annual Grant Award Letters are issued in a timely manner.


What skills are we looking for?

This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual interested in translational research and early phase oncology to shape a role which combines project management, strategy implementation and working with senior stakeholders


  • Educated to at least degree level, PhD desirable, or equivalent work experience in a scientific/medical field.
  • Ability to work with external, senior stakeholders, with at times conflicting needs
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentational) and influencing skills
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, able to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, working to challenging targets and deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and solve them quickly
  • Prepared to take on a variety of tasks to support broader team and department initiatives
  • Proficiency in project management techniques and processes
