The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) and the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological Research (CVER) are seeking an Epidemiology Research Associate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position will mainly provide research support in epidemiology and biostatistics to members within and outside the CVER at the AVC. The CVER is located within the Department of Health Management (DHM), one of four AVC departments at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). The research support may include (but is not limited to) the following tasks:

  • To provide epidemiological and biostatistical support to AVC undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs and faculty within and outside CVER
  • To develop complex epidemiological, computational and/or modelling expertise of the CVER group, which may require advanced programming skills (possibly in dedicated epidemiological or statistical software) and modelling techniques
  • To conduct and support research projects involving complex epidemiological, computational and/or modelling expertise, including co-supervisor activities and supervisory committee membership for graduate students, after having been appointed as graduate faculty
  • To assist with writing grant proposals requiring advanced and complex epidemiological, computational and/or modelling expertise
Workload
  • The workload in the position should be distributed roughly 50:50 between CVER and non-CVER research and support for epidemiological and statistical needs of the college, as indicated:
a) epidemiological and statistical support for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students outside CVER within AVC, all carried out under the supervision of a faculty member of the DHM working in epidemiology and/or statistics (normally the AVC biostatistician)

b) support for research in epidemiological methods of relevance for the CVER group, all carried out under the supervision of a senior CVER faculty member

  • The contributions of the epidemiology research associate to collaborative projects among CVER members would constitute a research component of the position, with a potential for scholarly activities, such as publication and participation in conferences
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates must have a University PhD degree with training in epidemiology or statistics or similar areas and must have experience as a post-doctoral researcher in this area for at least 2 years
  • Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of applied epidemiology and statistics, preferably from health or biological sciences
  • Familiarity with veterinary science is an asset but not required
  • Candidates must have strong computer skills, including broad familiarity and experience with coding in relevant statistical software (Stata and R are the most used statistical programs in the CVER group) and have the ability to learn new statistical methods and programs quickly
  • The candidate must have documented experience with reporting and interpretation of epidemiological (including statistical) analyses to users at varying levels of technical expertise
  • The candidate must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • The candidate must also have strong organizational, communication and interpersonal relations skills
