The Parkland School Division has a Permanent Part-time (0.869 FTE) Library Technician I position available at Brookwood School, in Spruce Grove, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for the circulation, ordering and cataloging of materials. You will facilitate student use of the library, inventory materials and supervise students as needed.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing literature, including circulation, ordering, and maintaining a collection of materials and resources. They must have a strong understanding of the Alberta Education document, Learning Commons Policy and Guidelines, and be capable of developing and overseeing a budget for the Learning Commons. Additionally, they should foster a positive and engaging environment that inspires students.
Function and Purpose of Position
A Library Technician I is the subject matter expert that maintains the day to day operations of the library. You will work with the school community including staff and students, to support diverse learning needs in a welcoming atmosphere. As part of a collaborative team and with the ability to work independently, you will be successful in creating a learning commons for all.
Library Technician I’s may:
- Work under the direction of the Principal and/or designate
- Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Learning Commons Resources and Instructional Support
- Management of literature including circulation, ordering and collection of materials and resources.
- Understanding of the Alberta Education document, Learning Commons Policy and Guidelines.
- Ability to create a positive environment that excites students.
- Ability to create and maintain a budget for the Learning Commons.
- Support an inclusive forward thinking literacy environment.
- Ability to network with others beyond the school setting.
- Familiarity with Maker Space and other innovative library practices.
- Ability to support instruction, research, literacy and learning in a digital/technology based and print-rich environment.
- Classifying and cataloguing new materials by assigning numbers, levels, subjects, etc.
Behaviour
• Ability to maintain a safe and secure environment for both students and staff through the application of de-escalation strategies and nonviolent crisis intervention techniques.
Student Assistance and Personal Care
- Provide support, assistance and supervision to students in a school setting.
Communication and Reporting
- Ability to build relationships with students and staff.
- Promote library services through school and community related campaigns and events.
Supervise Students
- Provide assistance to students using the space and resources.
Student Personal Development
- Providing advice, assistance and direction to build student skills and knowledge.
- Tutor, mentor and coach students in the use of Library resources.
Other Duties
- Other assigned duties as required
Education and Experience
a) Education:
i) High School Diploma.
ii) Information and Library Technology Diploma or equivalent is an asset
b) Experience:
i) 3 to 5 years of related experience.
ii) Experience with Destiny, Discovery Education, Google Apps and technology hardware would be an asset.

This work is most rewarding for those who enjoy working with children (especially physically, emotionally and behaviorally challenged children), having clear rules and guidelines for their work, and finding innovative ways to handle situations.
Decision Making
Library Technicians are required to make decisions, with the appropriate approval, based on the needs and requirements of the school community relating to the Learning Commons. It is essential to keep the library organized and to ensure resources are easily accessible.
Working with Others
Some of the usual contacts that Library Technician’s will have in this position are:
1. Employees in the same school as there will be an exchange of everyday information and may require explanation and interpretation of that information.
2. Employees in other schools will exchange factual or everyday information as needed.
3. Daily communication with students will require explanation and interpretation of everyday information.
4. Ability to communicate observations regarding health and behaviours of students to the teacher (as gathered in logs, charts, and data sheets).
Work is performed independently and with minimal supervision. Specific directions and instructions are provided during work process.
Physical Demands
The Library Technician I may be required to routinely lift items weighting up to 50 lbs. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required.
- Ability to work in a fast pace, noisy environment with many interruptions throughout the day.
- Ability to stand, bend, sit, and reach to complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to provide assistance to students, staff and general public.
Working Conditions
Library Technicians work indoors except when supervising children outdoors or going on field trips as needed.
Library Technicians may have the same holiday schedule as teachers, including a long summer break as well as winter and spring breaks. However, they work on a ten-month contract basis and therefore are not paid during the summer months.
The scheduled hours to be worked will be determined by each specific position.
This position may require the use of a personal vehicle.

Library Technicians must agree to respect the confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, teachers and other staff.
This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.
This position is covered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement.
Hours of Work: 30.4 hours/week (Monday to Friday - 8:30 AM to 3:05 PM)
Pay Rate: $22.92 - $25.73 (Pay Group 2)
