Are you an emerging communications professional who is looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your community? This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing Thought Leadership communications team at Toronto Community Housing and help make positive changes for the 110,000 people who live in our communities.

Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Thought Leadership, as a Communication Consultant you will play a supporting role in developing content, messaging and stakeholder relationships that build TCHC’s reputation and create opportunities for meaningful new partnerships. We are looking for communicators with a track record of political acumen, strategic thinking and storytelling, all combining to support TCHC’s new multi-year Thought Leadership strategy. Knowledge of the housing sector is an asset in this work.

As part of the broader Strategic Planning & Communications (SP&C) team, you will be part of a hybrid work environment that is largely remote, with occasional requirements for on-site participation at stakeholder meetings, public events and monthly SP&C team days. In the regular course of work, the successful candidate will have regular contact with the Director of Strategic Communications, Chief Corporate Services Officer and Chief Executive Officer, as well as other members of the Extended Leadership Team of TCHC.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide communications planning, writing, event management and counsel for thought leadership priorities, including initiatives focused on elected official and government agency relationship building, conference and event participation, and profile building.
  • Provide communications planning and support for initiatives as assigned by the Senior Advisor of Thought Leadership or Director of Strategic Communications Offer ongoing analysis of the public and political discourse around community housing, helping to identify opportunities for TCHC to be agile in building profile and new stakeholder relationships.
  • Research and identify or create stakeholder relationship and public relations opportunities to build TCHC’s reputation and strengthen its position as a thought leader.
  • Support Directors and Executives as part of the work of TCHC’s broader Extended Leadership Team to deliver on Thought Leadership strategy opportunities, including conferences, presentations and community events.
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of communications projects, vehicles, tactics and practices.
  • Represent Toronto Community Housing interests with community agencies, elected officials and other partners in planning and executing joint corporate communications strategies.
  • Provide writing and editorial services and strategic advice to assist other business units with preparing presentations, talking points and speaking notes to ensure maximum clarity, effectiveness and consistency with TCHC’s Thought Leadership strategy.
  • Work with Strategic Communications Unit colleagues and other key business units to support managers and staff throughout the organization in delivering timely and effective communication to tenants and stakeholders about Toronto Community Housing’s programs and services.
  • Occasional after-hours engagements on evenings or weekends to support events or stakeholder meetings.

What You’ll Need

  • Postsecondary degree or diploma from a recognized university or college in political science, corporate communications, public relations, marketing communications, business communications, social sciences, journalism or English, or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and on-the-job experience
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in communications, policy development or politics, with demonstrated experience in writing, stakeholder relations and strategy
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including a demonstrated ability to apply clear language and design principles
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver expected outcomes in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment with multiple projects, strict completion deadlines and changing or competing priorities
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources and make appropriate decisions
  • Strong networking and relationship-building skills
  • A strong team player who is also able to work independently
  • High degree of judgment and discretion; ability to analyze, problem solve and mediate complex situations with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal communication, interview, research and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of key issues faced by Toronto Community Housing staff, tenants, stakeholders and partners
  • Proficient with computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, content management software, Adobe Design Suite, SharePoint, etc.
  • Ability and sensitivity in providing respectful service to diverse populations
  • Experience developing and implementing digital media strategies would be an asset
