Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) with experience in immunology, hematology, and transfusion medicine to join our team as an Immunoglobulin (IG) Therapy Nurse. This role is central to supporting patients receiving immunoglobulin therapy and plays a vital role in education, coordination, and clinical support throughout the treatment journey. The RN will report to the Manager of Ambulatory Care as well as the Nurse Coordinator of the Immune Globulin Treatment Program at the Ottawa Hospital.

Duties

  • Provide clinical support during patient visits including vaccines, blood work, and patient teaching.
  • Educate patients and families on disease-specific information and treatment expectations.
  • Assess patient eligibility for IG therapies and provide guidance on Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), Subcutaneous Immunoglobulin (SCIg), and Facilitated subcutaneous immunoglobulin (fSCIg) options.
  • Train patients and caregivers on SCIG/fSCIG home infusions, and provide ongoing support.
  • Monitor and report adverse events (AEs) to Transfusion Medicine as required, as well as required reporting to Health Canada as per Vanessa’s Law.
  • Manage and coordinate all IG treatment orders.
  • Enroll and manage patients in pharmaceutical-sponsored Patient Support Programs (PSPs).
  • Complete and maintain MOHLTC Immunoglobulin Request Forms and any other relevant paper work.
  • Enroll and update patient information in the ONIT (Ontario Immunoglobulin Therapy) case registry and complete required questionnaires.
  • Triage new consults, and support clinical workflow.
  • Act as a liaison and resource for other healthcare professionals involved in IG therapy.
  • Develop and maintain patient education materials and resources.
  • Attend annual ONIT program workshops and ONIT RN workshops.
  • Compliant with legislation, organizational and departmental, policies, regulations, standards and procedures related to patient care and occupational health and safety.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, and implementing improvements/changes as appropriate

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the CNO.
  • BLS certification required
  • Additional training in infusion therapy is an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of recent clinical experience, in immunology, hematology or chronic disease management
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience with IG therapies (IVIG, SCIG orfSCIG)
  • Minimum 1-year experience providing formal clinical teaching, training and mentorship, exceeding solely preceptor/mentor activities

Knowledge, Skills & Ability

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to actively participate in relevant internal and external committees and groups concerned with patient blood management issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously.
  • Administrative and computer skills essential. Experience in word processing, spreadsheet, Powerpoint and database applications.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.

  • Competency in the application of the College of Nurses Standards.
