As a Scalehouse Attendant at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC), you will provide a high level of customer service to commercial and residential customers as well as contractors and City of Edmonton employees.

The Scalehouse Attendant primarily works inside the Scalehouse but may be required to work at the Residential Transfer Station based on operational needs. You may be required to handle and process hazardous materials and perform various labour activities to maintain the site and ensure traffic flow. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style.

What will you do?

  • Weigh, screen and track loads entering and leaving the EWMC using specialized computer software
  • Ensure proper load disposal including ensuring all materials received fall within waste control regulations
  • Understand directions, follow procedures and memorize very detailed identification and material handling requirements
  • Provide traffic control, snow removal and other related duties as required to the Scalehouse and Site operations
  • Handle cash transactions according to corporate standards and cash handling procedures with a high degree of accuracy
  • Provide excellent customer service, following the standard operating procedure to ensure the safety of the public and employees and comply with all environmental requirements
  • Educate the public and respond to customer inquiries with professional and courteous service
  • Work in a fast-paced environment doing multiple tasks under tight time constraints
  • Perform other related duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years’ recent experience in a fast-paced customer service environment, with computer data entry skills, along with experience operating a cash register for cash handling purposes


Assets:

  • Experience using GEOWARE Waste Management Software
  • Knowledge of Waste Management services and initiatives

  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to provide courteous and professional services
  • Ability to understand directions, follow procedures and very detailed identification and material handling requirements

  • Exceptionally strong conflict resolution skills and decision-making abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to understand and comply with written and verbal instructions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of First Aid Certification and WHMIS training
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • The EWMC has limited public transportation; therefore, supplying one's car for transportation is required for commuting
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Applicants may be tested


Work Environment:

  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the assigned duties, specifically in environments with poor lighting, dust, noise and various weather conditions
  • Must be able to work various shifts from 5:30 am to 8:00 pm, 7 days a week, 362 days a year

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Sunday

Salary: $29.912 - $33.077 (Hourly)

Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CUPE and will be forthcoming shortly.
