What will you do?:
- Design, authenticate and review new traffic signal timings, designs, and operational solutions for traffic signals on the transportation mobility network
- Development of authenticated operational procedures, policies and guidelines for the implementation of traffic signal management systems and traffic control devices for both planned and unplanned events Identify and prioritize locations on an annual basis requiring improvements
- Review and comment on circulating engineering designs from other City Departments and stakeholders (e.g. engineering consultants, Integrated Infrastructure Services)
- Develop, prepare and/or review authenticated engineering plans and designs for traffic signals, ITS devices and overhead signs
- Prepare and authenticate functional specifications and create timing sheet for new traffic signal and traffic control equipment layouts
- Assist in traffic engineering studies relative to the traffic signal system; develop strategies with systems engineers to improve the traffic system
- Work with traffic technicians and contractors on traffic control systems
- Ensure operational system documentation (e.g. logs) is completed and available
- Review and prepare comprehensive responses to the inquiries received from the public, stakeholders, members of Council and the other City staff regarding traffic signal, street lighting and traffic control device operations
- Project management including creating scope of work, budgeting and cost management (budget, estimate review, change orders, inspections, commissioning, project closeout)
- Assist with procurement and contract management
- Use engineering software and systems to design and manage the operations of the traffic signal, street lighting and traffic control device system
- Perform other related duties as required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Electrical Engineering or equivalent from a recognized university preferably with coursework in transportation planning, traffic operations, and transit and traffic engineering
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment.
- Minimum 4 years progressively responsible experience in municipal or related project engineering
- Strong project coordination skills including an understanding of project management methods and techniques.
- Experience working with municipalities.
- Understand and adherence to all APEGA regulations and standards and demonstrated knowledge of industry standards and practices
- Experience reviewing and creating traffic signals timing design
- Demonstrated knowledge and work experience in project management and construction management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to effectively communicate with a wide range of both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated understanding and experience with transportation related software applications
- Experience working in engineering, analysis, and design
- Ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and make appropriate technical decisions to address complex engineering issues with broad objectives and/or guidelines
- Proven planning, organizational and problem solving skills
- Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills with experience in solving complex and sensitive issues
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop strong relationships and work in a collaborative, integrated manner
- Experience working with relevant codes, legislation, regulations, policies and procedures (OH&S, Environmental, etc.)

- Experience or familiarity with transportation related software applications
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite .
