The Schulich School of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for four fully funded PhD positions in the field of sustainable transportation engineering. Successful candidates will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team co-supervised by Dr. Alex de Barros, Dr. Lina Kattan, Dr. Saeid Saidi, and Dr. Merkebe Demissie. Research areas include sustainable transportation, electrification, artificial intelligence, and network optimization.
Available Research Topics
– Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Propulsion Systems: Research on sustainable fuel cell electric vehicles for public and shared transport. Relevant experience includes electric propulsion systems, life-cycle assessment (LCA), and energy systems. Additional experience with energy policy or techno-economic analysis is advantageous.
– Deep Learning for Electric Mobility Services: Development of AI models for electric vehicle demand prediction and smart infrastructure. Required skills include Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, and deep learning (CNN, GNN, LSTM, Transformer). Experience with mobility systems or EV infrastructure is a plus.
– Decision-Making Tools for Electrified Transit: Creation of multicriteria tools for assessing bus electrification. Skills required include optimization, MATLAB/R/Python, and familiarity with public transit and GIS.
– Transit Network Optimization & System Dynamics: Redesign of urban bus networks under electrification constraints. Candidates should have experience in mathematical modeling, system dynamics, and policy analysis.
