Purpose Driven Position

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Specialist, Hardware R&D, will lead Carboncure’s technical innovation and product development efforts. This includes developing cutting edge electro-mechanical/controls solutions to technical problems worldwide, leading the research, design, testing, and optimization of systems, leading mathematical analysis on multi-phase CO2 flow, managing engineering drawings, enhancing product reliability and efficiency, and creating and managing plc programs and their versions. In this role you’ll work closely with fellow engineers and the Production/QA team.

What you'll be doing

Design, Engineering, Issue Resolution, System Optimization:

  • Develop and implement electro-mechanical design modifications to existing equipment to enhance performance, reliability, and serviceability based on feedback from the field and R&D insights.
  • Apply mathematical skills to refine and validate the multiphase CO2 dosing flow model, ensuring accurate and consistent CO2 delivery.
  • Innovate and improve the design of control enclosures and valve enclosures, considering factors such as manufacturability, cost, and serviceability.
  • Create new or modify existing plc software programs to interact with the physical electro-mechanical system.
  • Create new or modify existing control architecture.
  • Create and manage engineering drawings (Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls).
  • Investigate and resolve complex, longstanding electro-mechanical challenges that our customers face.
  • Analyze system performance data, including IoT sensor data, to diagnose root causes of equipment downtime and implement effective solutions to improve reliability.
  • Travel to customer sites as required for problem identification and research, and testing solutions. It may be required at times to perform system installations/upgrades.
  • Proactively identify potential failure modes and develop preventative and corrective actions.

System Integration and Communication:

  • Understand and work with various digital and analog data communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, analog 4-20mA signals) for seamless integration with diverse concrete batching systems.
  • Create new tools or methods for communication.
  • Ensure robust communication and data exchange between CarbonCure equipment and the internal data storage.

Engineering Documentation & Change Control:

  • Meticulously manage all technical documentation, including software files, PLC logic, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and BOMs, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and accessibility across teams.
  • Champion robust version control practices for all design assets, maintaining clear traceability and revision history for every change throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Create and maintain detailed Management of Change (MOC) records for all design modifications, capturing the rationale, technical impact, approval steps, and implementation timelines from concept through deployment.

Calibration and Testing:

  • Develop and refine field calibration procedures for CO2 injection systems, utilizing methods such as water bag testing and applying buoyancy force principles for accurate measurement.
  • Conduct rigorous testing and validation of new designs and system modifications.

Technical Expertise and Innovation:

  • Contribute to the research and development of new features that enhance CarbonCure's product offerings and intellectual property.
  • Stay current with advancements in mechanical engineering, control systems, CO2 handling, and industrial automation.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a closely related field with significant exposure to mechanical, electronics and control systems.
  • Proven experience (3-5+ years) in an R&D, controls engineering, field engineering, or a product development role involving industrial equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and resolving issues related to fluid dynamics, thermodynamics (specifically phase change and freezing of gases like CO2), and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with industrial control systems, PLCs, ladder logic, sensors, and data acquisition.
  • Experience with mathematical modeling and data analysis.
  • Experience with PCBs, breadboards, and their design and application.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, material science).
  • Proficiency in electronics and control systems engineering (sensor technology, actuators, control logic, data communication protocols, bus bars, AC/DC delivery).
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills, with the ability to apply physics principles to practical engineering problems.
  • Familiarity with solenoid valves, pressure regulators, flow meters, and other process control instrumentation.
  • Understanding of digital and analog communication protocols used in industrial automation (e.g., Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP).
  • Understanding of reliability engineering principles and methodologies.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites
  • Knowledge of control panel design is an asset.

Work Environment

  • This is a permanent, full-time position at our Headquarters in Dartmouth, NS. This position will involve travel on occasion to customer sites.
  • A minimum of eight (8) hours Monday to Friday is required, with the possibility of additional time based on projects and customer demand.
