Tradesperson 2 - Electrician POSITION OVERVIEW

This is skilled work at the journeyman level involving the performance of a variety of electrical, installation, maintenance and repair tasks including those related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in municipal buildings, structures and facilities/parks. The position maintains, installs, repairs and tests electrical equipment. This position lays out, reads and interprets plans, drawings and specifications of city buildings and facilities in accordance with by-laws and codes. This position requires the successful incumbent to evaluate the time, materials and equipment needed to complete work orders.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCECompletion of the 12th school grade supplemented by completion of technical courses related to the work, plus completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trades, and sound related journeyman experience working with electrical and electronic control equipment and systems; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and specialized electrical and electronic control systems and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in such work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the applicable rules and regulations governing the electrical work performed.
  • Ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi skilled electrical tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to supervise one or more skilled or semi skilled subordinates as required.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and work from sketches, diagrams and layouts.
  • Ability to make responsible decisions under pressure and in response to emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain records, estimate materials required and requisition parts and materials as required.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment used in electrical work.

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Certificate of Qualification – Red Seal (Electrician).
