The Department of Western Technology Services (WTS) is a central source committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. WTS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western’s faculties and support units to leverage central supported technology solutions and services where it makes sense.

The Western Information Services Group (WISG) includes a team accountable for the installation and development of enterprise administrative applications delivered by PeopleSoft (an Oracle Company). These applications enable enterprise services to be delivered to the Western community. We strive for continuous improvement of quality, efficiency and value to provide the best solutions to students, faculty and staff.

Responsibilities


The Database Administrator (DBA) is a senior technical leader responsible for the implementation, optimization, maintenance and support of PeopleSoft databases and applications that support critical university operations. The role works in collaboration with various departments within WTS and with business system owners across campus (Human Resources, Finance, Registrar’s Office, etc.) to plan, monitor and control the evolution of the applications and to ensure the reliability, security and scalability of enterprise systems. The role defines and resolves information flow and content issues to translate business requirements into environment specific data/storage solutions. The Database Administrator monitors and analyzes performance metrics and allocates resources to achieve optimum performance. The role implements and performs backup and recovery procedures for data storage and develops tools and techniques to access data in a secure environment. The Database Administrator contributes to a common set of standards, methods and procedures and recommends software and hardware upgrade paths and helps identify opportunities for innovation, lead complex upgrade and integration initiatives, and contribute to institutional planning by aligning database architecture with Western’s strategic goals.

Qualifications


Education:

  • 3 year Community College Diploma in an information technology field or a University Degree with a minor in an information technology field
  • Proficiency in a variety of technologies, including PeopleSoft, PeopleTools, XML, HTML, etc.
  • University Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Certifications in Oracle PeopleTools Application Developer would be an asset
  • Project Management certification preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience with database design and administration
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft applications and tools or similar enterprise applications
  • Experience with PeopleSoft modules including Human Resources, Financials, Campus Solutions is preferred
  • Experience working in Higher Education or public sector environments would be an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of one or more PeopleSoft applications and PeopleSoft Internet Architecture (PIA)
  • Knowledge of Oracle databases, OCI and tools (such as Linux, backup/recovery procedures)
  • Expertise in use of database and application tools (e.g. PeopleTools)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Seeks and shares relevant information, opinions, and judgments
  • Critical thinking and discernment to assess and scope areas for improvement and an ability to offer creative solutions
  • Applies new knowledge and skills to practical use on the job; furthers learning through experience in practicing new approaches and behaviors

  • Strong customer service skills to handle inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
  • Ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service directly and indirectly to satisfy those expectations
  • Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments in PeopleSoft
  • Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological development and adapt efficiently to emerging priorities
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users from internal contacts up to senior management
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedural documentation
  • Ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments and key business partners
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
