The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Coordinator to join our dedicated Environment and Climate Resilience section within Urban Planning and Economy. Bring your expertise in environmental protection, regulatory knowledge, and remediation including: to our innovative and high performing team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and improving the City's environmental management system.

The Environmental Coordinator provides crucial support to assigned client business areas, ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the organization's environmental management system (Enviso) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. This system is vital for protecting the environment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and continuously enhancing environmental performance. Reporting to the Environmental Manager, you will collaborate with technical, environmental, and engineering specialists to achieve environmental objectives and targets. Your work will involve planning, supporting, and coordinating activities to maintain and continuously improve the environmental management system. You will also be responsible for executing processes, procedures, and controls to ensure environmental compliance and investigating and identifying environmental issues.

What will you do?

  • Champion environmental excellence by supporting and enhancing our ISO 14001-aligned environmental management system
  • Dive into environmental audits, ensuring we're always in tip-top shape with our procedures and environmental legislation
  • Be our environmental detective, investigating issues and finding solutions to keep us compliant and continuously improving
  • Share your expertise! You'll provide valuable environmental advice to our internal teams, helping them set green objectives
  • Craft compelling technical reports, translating complex environmental data into clear, actionable insights
  • Become a trusted liaison, fostering strong connections between our business areas and regulatory bodies
  • Lead exciting environmental projects and studies, from procurement to ensuring top-notch quality
  • Stay ahead of the curve, researching and developing new environmental practices and emergency preparedness plans
  • Be a catalyst for change, inspiring continuous improvement and helping us achieve our environmental goals


Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Sciences (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience) or Engineering (environmental); OR completion of a recognized two-year diploma program in Sciences or Technology with specialization in Environmental Sciences
  • A minimum of 6 years experience with a degree OR a minimum of 8 years with a diploma
  • Experience in environmental regulatory permitting and applications
  • At least one of the following areas:
    • Environmental and/or risk management
    • Energy management
    • Ambient air quality management
    • Water quality management
    • Integrated pest management
    • Environmental assessment and permitting
    • Natural capital and nature-based solutions
    • Contaminated site/brownfield management (including expertise in legislation, remediation and management strategies)
    • ISO management systems


Assets:

  • Working in cross-functional teams in large, complex organizations
  • Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist
  • Data management abilities


Skills required for success:

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental management systems, applicable laws, bylaws, regulations, and legislative requirements
  • Experience with environmental improvement strategies and industry best practices
  • Competency in analytical and critical thinking, with knowledge of incident investigation, and risk assessment and management
  • Demonstrated relationship-building and conflict-management skills, able to present required outputs in a compelling manner and influence decision makers
  • Strong written communication skills, capable of developing documents ranging from technical to general
  • Ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful, and safe manner
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and activities with internal staff and external agencies
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation/collaboration
  • Research and problem-solving skills to gather required information, make decisions, and develop recommendations
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • You will be required to arrange your own transportation for use while on City business. Where appropriate, you will be reimbursed for expenses related to that travel in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. You will be required to obtain business auto insurance


Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range: $51.171 - $65.301 Hourly $90,150.51 - $115,044.04 Annually

Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CSU 52 will be forthcoming shortly.
