Job Description

We are currently searching for an Intermediate Fisheries Biologist/Aquatic Scientist to join our team in Calgary. This role requires a scientific background in fisheries and aquatic ecology and the ability to support a growing environmental team based in our Calgary office. The position involves field assessment design and implementation, reporting and regulatory submissions, and business development. You will tackle a wide variety of environmental work primarily on local and regional infrastructure engineering projects through all project phases, including local fieldwork and occasional remote work.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Conducting fish and fish habitat assessments for culvert, bridge, outfall, water intake and other infrastructure projects primarily within southern Alberta.
  • Preparing project Request for Review submissions and reports containing Qualified Aquatic Environment Specialist (QAES) recommendations.
  • Drafting Fisheries Act Authorization applications including developing fish habitat offsetting plans.
  • Collaborating with project design teams to incorporate mitigations to minimize environmental and regulatory risk.
  • Corresponding with provincial and federal regulators.
  • Supporting other environmental disciplines (e.g., wildlife, wetlands) during fieldwork or reporting deliverables such as Environmental Evaluations or Environmental Risk Assessments.
  • Leading or assisting proposal writing and business development activities.
  • Training and mentoring junior staff.


Job Requirements

What you will bring:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Biology, Fisheries, or Aquatic Science.
  • Preference given to individuals with a professional designation (P.Biol., R.P.Bio.).
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental consulting, with demonstrated experience working collaboratively in teams and delivering tasks.
  • Practical experience in fish habitat and riparian assessments, offsetting and habitat design support, stream channel processes, and fish habitat impact assessments.
  • Thorough understanding of the federal Fisheries Act and Species at Risk Act and provincial Water Act including Codes of Practice.
  • Experience providing guidance to design teams and communicating with regulators.
  • Strong time management and organizational ability.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, encouraged and supported by the organization.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
