Under the Manager, Financial and Regulatory Reporting position - Alberta, the Senior Accountant - Alberta specializes in financial and regulatory reporting to join our national insurance company, headquartered in Sherwood Park. As the Senior Accountant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of our financial statements and regulatory filings. Your expertise will be instrumental in maintaining our reputation for financial transparency and regulatory compliance.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with IFRS and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting for assigned insurance companies.
  • Coordinate with other departments to gather necessary financial information and resolve any discrepancies or issues.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide insightful commentary on financial performance to management.
  • Regulatory Reporting:
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports to governing bodies, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and deadlines.
  • Stay abreast of changes in regulatory requirements and ensure timely implementation of necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather data and provide support during regulatory audits and examinations.
  • Assist in responding to inquiries from regulatory authorities, addressing any reporting-related matters.
  • Financial Analysis and Reconciliations:
  • Perform detailed financial analysis, including profitability analysis, trend analysis, and forecasting.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing accurate and comprehensive financial data and explanations.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement efficient financial reporting procedures.
  • Compliance and Controls:
  • Maintain a strong understanding of accounting principles, insurance industry regulations, and best practices.
  • Develop and implement internal controls and procedures to ensure compliance with financial and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and assess compliance risks and recommend mitigating actions to management.
  • Participate in the development and enhancement of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Team Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as finance, risk management, and actuarial departments.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource for accounting and regulatory matters, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field is required.
  • Designated CPA is preferred but nearing completion may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the insurance or financial industry, is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Proficiency in financial software and advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, risk management, and compliance practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present financial information to stakeholders.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior.
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel) is required.
  • Fluent in English with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is required.
  • Fluent in French with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is an asset.
  • Successful completion of a credit check, criminal background check, education verification, CPA enrollment (where required), license and certification verification (where applicable), and employment reference checks is required before employment.
