Position Overview:

Steel Reef is seeking a Development Engineer, based in Calgary, to lead early-stage project development for our Saskatchewan assets. This role is responsible for progressing projects through pre-FEED and FEED phases up to sanctioning, working closely with operations, business development, and external customers. This position reports directly to the Manger, Development Engineering.


The role focuses on identifying and developing fit-for-purpose infrastructure solutions, which may include:

  • Pipelines and compression (greenfield and brownfield)
  • Gas plant optimization and debottlenecking
  • Natural gas liquids projects (e.g., terminals, fractionation, and storage)
  • New ventures such as combined heat and power (CHP) and carbon capture initiatives


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead project scoping and front-end development.
  • Prepare cost estimates, schedules, risk summaries, regulatory strategies and opportunity summaries to support approvals.
  • Develop clear and concise schematics to effectively communicate project scopes to both management and customers.
  • Lead technical discussions with customers.
  • Perform pipeline hydraulic and facility process modeling, including compressor performance runs.
  • Proactively identify value-add opportunities for Steel Reef or our customers.
  • Drive creative, cost-effective engineering solutions tailored to operational and commercial needs.
  • Manage key external vendors including engineering firms, land agents, surveyors, and environmental consultants.
  • Ensure long-lead equipment is prepped for procurement upon project sanctioning.
  • Transition projects to the Execution Team at sanctioning.
  • Occasionally manage execution through to commissioning when required.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of facilities engineering experience (pipelines, gas plants, compression, etc.).
  • Strong technical background in mechanical, process, and pipeline systems, with working knowledge across disciplines.
  • Proven ability to progress projects with limited information and direction.
  • Demonstrated success in both front-end project development and project execution.
  • Understanding of project economics and drivers.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills; comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations.
  • Proficient with process simulation tools such as VMG Symmetry or HYSYS (asset).
  • Willingness to travel regularly to operating sites.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience working in Saskatchewan is an asset.


Education:

  • Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech.) with a Canadian provincial association.
