Job Description
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to Manager or designate, conducts planned educational and recreational activities for children, adolescents, and their families. Provides activities that further the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development of children and youth. The Child Life Specialist acts as a patient advocate, functions as a member of the Child, Youth & Family (CYF) Department and as a member of an assigned health care team, in accordance with the professional standards of practice of the Child Life Council.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Child & Youth Care from a recognized program;
- One (1) year recent related experience;
- Current Child Life Certification;
- Eligible for registration with the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP);
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to assess and interact with patients and families applying theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural diversity.
- Ability to represent and communicate the role of child life to others.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
