The Deputy Fire Marshal - Regulatory (DFM-Reg) reports to the Northwest Territories (NWT) Fire Marshal and plays a key role in ensuring fire safety across the territory. In this position, you will oversee the delivery of fire inspections and investigations conducted by the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM). You will also supervise and provide quality assurance for the OFM's regulatory functions.

As a statutory appointee under the Fire Prevention Act (FPA), you will work closely with the Deputy Fire Marshal - Programs & Policy (DFM-P&P) and the Senior Technical Officer, Code Compliance. Together, you will coordinate the development and implementation of building and fire safety programs throughout the NWT.

Your responsibilities include offering expert guidance to OFM staff, including regional Assistant Fire Marshals (AFMs), as well as advising community governments, GNWT and federal departments, and private sector clients. You will also support regional operations to ensure compliance with the FPA.

This role directly impacts the safety and well-being of NWT communities. To succeed, you must have in-depth knowledge of building and fire safety codes, standards, and regulations, and be able to operate within legal frameworks to enforce compliance.

You should also be well-versed in fire investigation principles, fire behavior, fluid dynamics, fire protection systems, and building construction theory. Please note that this position involves exposure to hazardous environments and potentially toxic substances that may remain airborne after a fire is extinguished.

Key Qualifications:

  • A relevant diploma (Public/Business Administration, Public Safety, Fire Sciences, Fire Service Administration) with 3 years of related experience.
  • A Class 5 NWT Driver's License.
  • Successful completion of the following National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) training courses:
  • NFPA 1001 Professional Firefighter level 2
  • 1021 Fire Officer Level 1
  • 1030 or 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1
  • 1033 Fire Investigator
  • 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level 1
  • 472 or 1072 Hazmat Awareness and Operation
  • Acceptable equivalency:
  • Certificate in Public/Business Administration, Public Safety, Fire Sciences, Fire Service Administration with 5 years of related experience and completion of the required NFPA training courses
  • OR completion of the required NFPA training courses with 5 years related experience plus additional NFPA training or other recognized fire service/emergency services training:
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 2/3/4
  • NFPA 1030 or 1031 Fire Inspector Level 2
  • NFPA 1035 Fire & Life Safety Educator
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level 2
