Blackbird Interactive is searching for a versatile intermediate engineer to keep our development pipelines and platform integrations running smoothly. You’ll architect and maintain reliable build systems, craft internal tools to boost team productivity, and work directly in the Unreal Engine 5 codebase to support platform and middleware integration. You’ll collaborate across disciplines to empower every artist, designer, and programmer to work efficiently.
What You’ll Tackle:
Build Systems & CI/CD:
- Design, automate, and monitor asset and code builds for multiple platforms (PC, console, etc.) using Unreal Build Tool, ADO/Jenkins/TeamCity (or similar), and scripting (Python, PowerShell)
- Develop and maintain intuitive tools (CLI and GUI) to streamline content pipeline tasks, version control, profiling, and performance analysis
- Work directly within Unreal Engine to integrate third-party platform features (e.g., SDKs, online services, middleware APIs) and ensure cross-platform compatibility
- Implement distributed and cloud-based build solutions (e.g., Incredibuild) to minimize turnaround time and maintain rapid iteration cycles
- Integrate automated tests, static analysis, and validation steps to ensure stability for every check-in
- Partner with gameplay, art, animation, audio, and production teams to identify workflow friction and deliver improvements across tools, platforms, and builds
- Profile editor/cook times, resolve performance bottlenecks, and keep builds efficient in terms of disk, bandwidth, and CPU usage
- Stay up-to-date with advances in Unreal Engine (e.g., build tool enhancements, modular workflows, new platform features) and share insights with the team
- Have 3+ years experience building and maintaining automated pipelines for Unreal Engine 4/5 or similar game engines
- Shipped at least one commercial game or large update, owning build, tools, or platform integration
- Write clean, maintainable C++ and are fluent in at least one scripting language (Python preferred)
- Enjoy solving tricky build/tooling/platform issues and explaining fixes clearly to any teammate
- Are comfortable with version control (Perforce, Git) and modern profiler/debugger suites
- Value collaboration, code quality, and continuous learning
- Deep knowledge of Unreal Build Tool, platform SDK integration, or asset pipeline optimization
- Experience speeding up builds with distributed tech (Incredibuild, FASTBuild)
- Passion for tools and processes that improve team productivity, accessibility, and inclusivity
