This Position Reports To

As a R&D Mechanical Engineer, you contribute significantly to successful project results in technology, software, product, and/or solution development, as well as associated Intellectual Property (IP) by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions. You act as the first point of contact in Research and Development (R&D)/software development/product engineering for specific product-related issues and maintenance.
This role is contributing to the Electrification, Installation Products division of ABB Canada and is located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
The work model is hybrid with 2 days per week at the office.

As a R&D Mechanical Engineer, you contribute significantly to successful project results in technology, software, product, and/or solution development, as well as associated Intellectual Property (IP) by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions. You act as the first point of contact in Research and Development (R&D)/software development/product engineering for specific product-related issues and maintenance.
This role is contributing to the Electrification, Installation Products division of ABB Canada and is located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
The work model is hybrid with 2 days per week at the office.
Responsibilities
- Technical/Scientific Proficiency: Demonstrates solid competence in technologies, tools, and methods in their own area of specialization by solving complex industrial problems, working independently, and with an ability to guide and mentor junior team members. Gains acknowledgment as an expert in their field by other members of the R&D/Product Engineering organization. Maintains recognized expertise in a specific area by integrating the latest developments in technologies, tools, and methodologies into their own work.
- Technology Direction and Customer Centricity: Demonstrates a solid understanding of the key drivers for ABB, as well as state-of-the-art technologies, tools, and methods in their own business/technology area as well as associated ABB products and offerings. Stays abreast of the current and planned R&D activities in their own area of expertise and uses unique technical knowledge to oversee development tasks. Understands the customer and business value created by their own contribution in the context of ABB’s overall offering.
- Innovation and Creativity: Leverages expertise in their own technical area to contribute innovative and creative ideas to various complex R&D assignments. Finds new ways of solving problems by following their own ideas, creating hypotheses, and defining ways to validate them. Identifies opportunities and proposes R&D activities accordingly.
- Projects, Processes, and Tools: Acts as project leader or senior project member, providing experience in the execution and use of supporting tools, processes, and methods. Leverages understanding of relevant standards when developing new technologies/products
- Quality and Continuous Improvement: Leads specific product quality improvements in their own area of responsibility and follows the results. Focuses on quality early in the development process and applies the necessary quality assurance practices. Understands the 'voice of the customer' to improve product quality. Proposes and participates in relevant product and process improvement programs.
- Teamwork, Collaboration, and Visibility: Collaborates actively with technical experts from other areas and across functions. Provides consulting services to internal and external stakeholders within their own area of expertise. Represents their team in relevant forums, internal and external to ABB, and makes comprehensive presentations.
- Knowledge Management: Documents work results (like findings, designs, or software), allowing others to maintain and improve them. Writes well-structured and concise technical reports and/or scientific publications, for internal and external audiences. Shares best practices related to technical documentation with junior team members. Shares knowledge and supports colleagues in applying the lessons learned to ensure timely and high-quality results. Provides consulting services to business operations and customers.
- Intellectual Property (IP) Management: Understands and initiates IP generation in their own area of specialization and participates in the project IP strategy development. Ensures appropriate protection of newly created IP and assists in defense and enforcement activities of the related technology. Monitors IP issues and alerts senior management if necessary.
- 8 to 10 years of experience as R&D Engineer and in project management.
- Bilingual French and English. French is required. English is necessary to communicate with clients outside Quebec.
- Background in Mechanical Engineering.
- Knowledge of UL, CSA standards is an asset.
- PMP certification and green belt are assets.
- Experience in dealing with customers is an asset.
