Position Summary

Laboratory Technician, General Procurement, Specimen Procurement Your goal in this position is to perform laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental and divisional policies, which include, phlebotomy, ECG, specimen processing and patient reception. You are knowledgeable in the safe handling and packaging of laboratory specimens, competent in the performance of ECG and blood collection, and have the knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks, write legibly and accurately record lab information. You demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and are able to communicate in written and oral English. You will provide excellent patient and family-driven care in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Receive, sort and prepare specimens for testing and referral
  • Receive patients, staff and visitors to the laboratory
  • Perform blood collection (venipunctures and capillary punctures) and ECG’s
  • Enter information into the lab computer and generate reports and work lists
  • Handle and distribute reports, record sheets and specimens

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • OSMT/CSMLS Certification or equivalent
  • Hospital experience preferred
  • Bilingualism in French/ English an asset
