The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is located in Northeastern Ontario and serves approximately 6,900 students in 17 schools located in Greater Sudbury, as well as in Killarney.

Reporting to the Manager of Financial Services, The Payroll / Benefit Clerk is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll, and performing various clerical and accounting tasks. The Payroll / Benefit Clerk is a member of the Financial Services team and provides support to other roles within the department as required

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Certification:

1 Year community college diploma or equivalent in accounting or other related field.

Experience Required:

1 Year minimum of recent payroll related experience.

Key Activities

Responsible for processing bi-weekly payroll for salaried and hourly employees, reconciling pay input and employee status changes, data entry, payroll registers, benefits, and various deductions. Ensures all wage changes are made accurately and in time for pay periods. The payroll/benefits clerk is responsible for the accurate processing of sick pay, benefits and vacation payouts. Posts payroll accounting transactions to the Finance System. Transmits electronic funds credit transactions to the banks.

Prepares employee record of employee and submits in a timely manner to Service Canada.

The payroll/benefits clerk is responsible for processing journal entries, responding to employee general inquiries related to payroll.

Reviews and analyzes regular reports and reports discrepancies to the Manager of Financial Services/designate.

Scope of Knowledge

A solid understanding of payroll processes, including wage calculations, tax withholdings, and compliance with federal and provincial labor laws. Familiarity with payroll software systems and basic accounting principles is essential. Knowledge of confidentiality protocols and data security practices is also critical to ensure sensitive information is handled appropriately.

Skills

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential. Writing skills are needed to respond to employee payroll concerns. Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Windows is crucial, along with strong mathematical, organizational, and time management abilities.

Maintaining discretion and confidentiality is vital for handling sensitive information. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are required to respond to inquiries. Problem-solving skills are necessary to troubleshoot electronic data issues and format reports. The ability to work independently and in a team, along with regular attendance, is mandatory.
