Position Summary

Two Full-Time Support Staff, replacement positions

(First consideration for support staff and academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective collective agreements)

Reporting to the Manager, Operations & Maintenance, the Plumber will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems across all campuses. This includes secondary water services, sanitary sewers, compressed gases, and heating and cooling water piping systems.

This role plays a key part in ensuring the safety and functionality of campus infrastructure and requires a proactive approach to health and safety in compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and Conestoga safety policies.

The successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site five days per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required.

This role is available at the Doon campus located at 299 Doon Valley Dr. in Kitchener and Conestoga’s Skilled Trades campus located at 25 Reuter Dr. in Cambridge. Please indicate your preferred location when applying. Travel is required to support other Conestoga campus locations.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and repair all plumbing systems and related equipment
  • Inspect and diagnose leaks, cracks, and seals to ensure safe and sanitary system operation
  • Replace worn or defective parts, flush plumbing lines and service fixtures and equipment
  • Install new plumbing systems and restore aging infrastructure in compliance with the Ontario Building Code and municipal regulations
  • Assess and repair stormwater and sanitary systems
  • Maintain sewage piping, pumps, fixtures, and high-pressure water systems, including 12-inch piping uncommon in many industry settings
  • Conduct chemical testing of water softeners and boiler systems
  • Install and maintain water filtration systems, including alkaline treatment units, and identify and resolve related water quality issues
  • Maintain natural gas service
  • Install and repair air lines, compressors, regulators, boilers and related piping
  • Service Nortec humidifiers, commercial water softeners, domestic hot water systems, on-demand systems, and heating and chilled water pumps
  • Troubleshoot heating and cooling system drainage issues, remove air from lines, and improve circulation and flow efficiencies
  • Provide guidance to Construction Services and skilled trades teams on plumbing systems and evolving code requirements
  • Identify and report health and safety hazards during routine inspections, including potential for exposure to biowaste products
  • Communicate college procedures to contractors and coordinate plumbing-related activities
  • Assess mechanical service requests related to academic programming and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Use specialized video inspection equipment (e.g., camera and line locator) to identify locations for stormwater, sanitary, portable water, and electrical services
  • Coordinate and support contractors during plumbing system shutdowns to facilitate inspections and preventative maintenance
  • Maintain accurate as-built plumbing drawings and documentation
  • Record test results and audit findings in accordance with building codes, municipal requirements and TSSA standards
  • Update records for backflow devices, pressure relief valve replacements and inventory
  • Review construction drawings and provide recommendations on plumbing system design and integration

Qualifications

  • Certificate of qualification as a Plumber (306A) is required
  • Gas Technician 2 (G.2) certification is required; Gas Technician 1 (G.1) certification is considered an asset
  • Current backflow prevention tester certification is required
  • Minimum eight years of practical experience in industrial and commercial applications after attaining a certificate of qualification is required
  • Thorough knowledge of current plumbing codes and applied standards, as well as heating and boiler systems
  • Basic welding and sprinkler system knowledge
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve complex mechanical plumbing system issues
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service and putting the needs of the client first
  • A valid G driver’s licence in good standing is required
  • Demonstrates flexibility in supporting after-hours emergency needs as situations arise
