At D-Wave, we’re helping customers realize the value of quantum computing today and are shaping the quantum-driven industrial and societal advancements of tomorrow.

About The Role

D-Wave’s Quantum Annealing Product is built upon a unique VLSI scale superconducting integrated circuit (IC) process. Developing this fabrication process and then using it to develop quantum products requires constant and careful attention to understand hundreds of fabrication process parameters. This flow of information is needed to help maintain and improve the fabrication process, and also to help understand which manufactured chips may be the best quantum processors. Much of this important information can be extracted from electrical probing of manufactured chips and test coupons even at room temperature – well above the superconducting transition temperature.

You will become the in-house expert and go-to resource for all things related to this probing, and data extracted from it. We will give you the opportunity to learn the domain specific knowledge you’ll need for this, but in return expect a curiosity and passion for, and commitment to full ownership of this important function.

What You'll Do

  • Operate and maintain a set of Electroglas 4080 8” wafer probers
  • Collect, analyze, summarize and report on critical data on fabricated quantum integrated-circuit wafers to stakeholders
  • Work with D-Wave’s superconducting fabrication team to understand what the critical process parameters are, and what the data is telling us about them
  • Work with D-Wave’s device and processor scientists to help understand correlations between device and processor performance and basic probing data
  • Work with the processor development and fabrication team to predict which chips are most likely to yield
  • Review Superconducting ASIC layouts to understand what is being tested

About You

  • Bachelors in Engineering Physics, Physics with Electrical Engineering experience, or Electrical Engineering with Physics interest
  • Strong background and interest in programming. The “robot” that does the manual work of probing has already been programmed, but programs can always be upgraded and improved. Our code is in Common Lisp – don’t worry - we have many experts to give advice and assistance in this programming language.
  • Strong data analysis and data mining experience
  • Previous wafer probing experience is useful but not required
  • Good verbal, written communication and visual presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences, and willingness to improve
  • Experience and interest in troubleshooting mechanical/electrical/software systems
  • Experience in electrical measurement
  • A deep curiosity and interest in solving mysteries, with a constant open eye for things that don’t seem to make sense. You may be the first to see a subtle issue in our fabrication process that no one was expecting or thought of looking for. You will be able to work in partnership with stakeholders to understand whether it is a design, testing, or fabrication issue.

Nice to have

  • Wafer probing experience
  • Experience with low-signal-level electrical measurements
  • Familiarity with device fabrication processes and cryogenic systems integration
  • Experience managing code contributions in collaborative software environments

A D-Waver's DNA
