Detailed Overview

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families:

The Indigenous Cultural Safety Educator participates in the development of a Fraser Health (FH) wide education plan, and leads the facilitation of cultural safety education and training. As a resource to FH staff, the Educator provides consultation and direction to address specific cultural safety issues; participates in the development of guidelines, systems, and instruments to support the achievement and maintenance of cultural safety throughout the continuum of health services; and collaborates with colleagues in other disciplines to ensure appropriate staff development and participation in education and cultural safety initiatives.

The Educator will work collaboratively with the Aboriginal Health Program, the Aboriginal community partners, and other internal/external stakeholders, to lead the organization in meeting its goal of enhancing Aboriginal people's access to FH services. Patient and staff safety is a priority and responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the education planning and reporting, the development of systems, curriculum, educational tools, instruments, and guidelines for achieving and maintaining cultural safety throughout the continuum of health services.
  • Provides organization-wide education planning and program-specific training that supports FH's commitment to deliver services in a manner that is perceived by recipients as being culturally safe.
  • Organizes and facilitates cultural safety education events in collaboration with local, internal and external partners. Effectively facilitates dialogue, identifies potential crisis responses, assesses situations and manages conflict within an emotionally-charged and cross-racial dynamic utilizing specialized skills and knowledge.
  • Leads the identification of needs and development of resource materials to ensure appropriate staff development and participation in the education and cultural safety initiatives within FH portfolios.
  • Acts as a resource to FH staff by coaching, mentoring, providing subject matter expertise, and making recommendations on cultural safety issues that arise.
  • Collaborates with FH colleagues in other programs, provincial Health Authorities, government partners, and Aboriginal community partners.
  • Develops, implements, and supports strategies to address FH's strategic direction and priorities of the Aboriginal Health program's strategic plan.
  • Collaborates with FH programs and Aboriginal community partners/organizations to support the development of Aboriginal/FH relationships at the community level.
  • Provides progress updates related to organizational targets for staff training and education.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelors Degree in Adult Learning or a related discipline. Three (3) to five (5) years of recent, related experience in coaching, mentoring, training, conflict resolution, and provision of facilitation of indigenous cultural competency curriculum and training, including education plans, evaluation, and reporting. These experiences will include working for an Aboriginal organization that included interacting and developing relationships with Aboriginal peoples and Aboriginal communities as well as government agencies and Ministries, along with extensive understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, inclusive of First Nations, Metis and Inuit, within FH.

  • Ability to extensively travel throughout the Health Authority. Driver's license required
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
