Our GPREP Department is looking for a dedicated Emergency Management Coordinator to join the team.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the GPREP Manager, the Emergency Management Coordinator provides strategic and operational support to ensure the effective coordination and delivery of emergency management within the Grande Prairie Region. This position plays a critical role in strengthening regional preparedness, supporting emergency response and recovery efforts, and ensuring compliance with provincial legislation and municipal emergency plans. Operating within the framework of the City of Grande Prairie and in collaboration with regional partners, the Emergency Management Officer is accountable for the coordination of planning initiatives, training and exercises, stakeholder engagement, and program evaluation. The role supports the development and implementation of emergency plans, policies, and procedures, while offering subject matter expertise and guidance to internal and external partners.

This position holds primary responsibility for the oversight and management of the following key functions:

  • Development, maintenance, and review of the Municipal Emergency Plan and associated hazard-specific response plans.
  • Coordination and delivery of training, drills, and functional exercises.
  • Supporting Emergency Social Services (ESS) planning and activation.
  • Liaison with provincial and regional emergency management partners.
  • Oversight of emergency notification systems and technology platforms.
  • Assistance with budget planning and tracking for emergency management programs.
  • Coordination of public education and awareness campaigns related to emergency preparedness.
  • Contribution to the design and implementation of business continuity and recovery plans.
  • Administrative support for mutual aid and inter-municipal emergency agreements.
  • Essential in supporting the GPREP Manager.
  • Ensuring the region remains ready and resilient in the face of emergencies and disasters.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, supplemented by a diploma in Emergency Management, Business Continuity or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates holding a bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Emergency Management, Public Safety, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in emergency management, municipal government, or a related high-pressure, multi-stakeholder environment is required.
  • Experience coordinating emergency response activities, facilitating training or exercises, and supporting strategic planning is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in the public sector will be considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic guidance to senior leadership will also be considered a strong asset.
  • ICS certification (minimum ICS 300; preference for ICS 200 instructor).
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Emergency Management Act and the Incident Command System.
  • Familiarity with Emergency Social Services (ESS) operations.
  • Experience with municipal emergency plans, business continuity, and hazard risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with emergency notification and planning platforms (e.g., Voyent Alert!, EMWorks)
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.

Hours

The standard workweek consists of an average of 35 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.

Compensation

Starting salary $36.11 - $46.69 per hour as per the Out-of-Scope Agreement.
