Job Title: Biologist 1

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor/Laboratory Manager

Department: Ecotoxicology Laboratory

Burnaby/Full Time

  • Contract position until July 2026

Basic Purpose

Perform routine toxicity analyses as directed by the Supervisor and/or Laboratory Coordinator

Key Accountability/Responsibilities

  • Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
  • Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy
  • Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
  • Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
  • Perform routine toxicity analyses and/or complex and GLP toxicity analyses in strict compliance to the requirements of the Standard Operating Procedures
  • Responsible to maintain cultures of bioassay organisms such as, rainbow trout, Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and various algae
  • Keep accurate records of all work, i.e., calibration and maintenance of instruments, water quality measurements, culture mortality and reproduction and test results
  • Enter and verify data and complete toxicity test reports
  • Maintain up-to-date training records and relevant qualifications
  • Participate in external & internal method audits and maintains a high level of theoretical & practical expertise
  • Write and update Standard Operating Procedures (Test Methods) and Work Instructions for bioassays
  • Develop, conduct, and validate toxicity methods for projects involving environmental and industrial projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills And Knowledge

  • A University Degree or a College Diploma in Sciences, preferably biology, ecotoxicology or related field with special emphasis in the discipline of toxicity
  • Two (2) years related ecotoxicology or biology laboratory experience is an asset
  • Ability to keep accurate records in order to comply within GLP standards
  • Self-directed and proven ability to organize, execute plans and objectives

Working Conditions

  • High level of work production in fast paced lab environment
  • The job requires flexible working hours, weekends, overtime and shift work
  • May involve long periods of standing
  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE

The salary range for this role is $22.62 - $25.75.

Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills,  experience, and market location.
