Purpose
Contributes to the overall success of our Commercial Banking units in the English Caribbean, Dominican Republic and the Pacific Alliance, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed and delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. The Director is also responsible for business development, process efficiencies and risk management across the IB commercial footprint.The incumbent ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.
What You’ll Do:
Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank
relationships, systems and knowledge.
Business Line Management:
- Assist with setting targets for loan growth, fee growth, deposits, net income and ROE.
- Partner with the field in identifying opportunities to enhance revenue and profit generation through regular touchbases (structured or ad hoc) and liaising with Finance and other support partners to further objectives/ address issues.
- Recommend and deliver improvements in the sales organization in order to deliver timely solutions that are adequate for the different business segments.
- Working with other business partners to develop and deliver strategies to increase the usage of ancillary products and/or introduce new products to ensure that RORWA is maximized and existing customers are retained.
- Support in strategic initiatives designed to position the business line competitively for the future.
- Identify potential opportunities for development of new business lines /products across the assigned markets.
- Work with Business Planning in the preparation of the financial reports for the business reviews or ad hoc reports as required from time to time.
Risk Management:
- Responsible for the prudent growth of the Bank’s risk assets through the development of attractive transactional activity, ensuring an acceptable mix between risk and return.
- Managing the effective structuring of transactions through the deal forum process, and oversight of the credit adjudication process with GRM through Senior Credit Committee (“SCC”) and Risk Policy Committee (“RPC”).
- Providing prompt and sound recommendations in the structuring, negotiating and delivering of financial solutions to the region.
- Analyze and approve requests to issue Terms Sheets within assigned limits.
- Collaborating with IB SAM/ Local CRM/Local SAM / GRM to assess the impact of problem loans or accounts of concern in the portfolio to maintain the portfolio credit quality.
- Review and support the underwriting and loan documentation of BNS (Offshore) deals for the assigned markets.
- Write / support the preparation of Industry Reviews, Single Name Limit Memos, and Country Reviews.
Training and Coaching:
- Participate as required in Senior level calling program for the field, providing support to the business unit as required and serving as a link with other areas of expertise across the Bank and/or within the region.
- Reviewing input from a variety of sources including the field, business partners, customers, competitive intelligence.
- Recommending initiatives and providing input to the Vice President(s) / Executive Vice President.
- Provide training and coaching to the field on credit-related matters and support the IB Commercial training programme initiatives as may be required.
Integration of Acquisitions:
- Manage the integration / divestiture process of the Commercial Business Line, with respect to the Bank’s acquisitions / divestitures in the region.
- Making assessments and recommendations with respect to staffing processes, credit parameters, risk management on ongoing post-transaction risks/processes, etc.
- Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
- Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
- Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
What You'll Bring:
- Minimum 5 years of credit, commercial banking or corporate banking experience required.
- Strong Credit skills, required for analyzing and structuring complex transactions across diverse industries, as well as proposing alternatives to mitigate risks in business opportunities that are outside normal policy.
- Fluency in Spanish is mandatory.
- Superior communication skills (oral & written)
- Strong coaching skills
- Knowledge of the Caribbean, Uruguay and PAC region, competitive environment and the Bank’s strategy for developing the regional platform.
- Proven client relationship management skills.
- Thorough product knowledge in lending products, including specialized industries, structured trade finance, as well as superior knowledge of the Bank’s ancillary products such as FX, Cash Management, Derivatives and Trade Finance.
- Good negotiation skills, both externally and internally.
- Understanding of Capital Markets on a global basis.
- Strong understanding of AML, Higher Risk Client and KYC requirements.
- Knowledge of major legal and regulatory issues in the region as well as the Bank’s other main markets.
