Job Title: EHS Specialist
Department: EHS
Position Reporting To: EHS Site Lead
Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time
General Description:
The EHS Specialist plays a key role in ensuring Bora’s compliance with EHS regulations, driving EHS initiatives, and aligning with both company and customer expectations for Environment, Health and Safety performance. This role will champion Bora’s EHS efforts and actively support the implementation and continuous improvement of Bora’s EHS programs. Working collaboratively across departments, the Specialist will identify opportunities, make informed decisions, and contribute to the site’s overall EHS goals.
Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
EHS Program Development & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and implement EHS programs, strategies, and plans that drive year-over-year improvements in performance. Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure success.
- Use subject matter expertise to influence employees across all levels of the organization and promote a proactive EHS culture in support of our goal of zero accidents.
Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Management
- Facilitate timely hazard identification, incident investigations, and the implementation of controls to mitigate EHS risks.
- Support the site’s Risk Assessment, EHS inspection programs by facilitating risk assessments and hazard identification (e.g. ergonomics, machinery safety, chemical management, construction).
- Support the Site’s Management of Change Program by reviewing, approving and recommending changes with potential EHS impact.
Incident & Emergency Response
- Support incident and emergency response efforts.
- Lead or participate in investigation (e.g. root cause analyses), facilitate after-action reviews, develop corrective action plans, and communicate learnings with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
Training & Communication
- Identify EHS training needs, including legal requirements, and seek to provide that training through the creation of EHS Programs/SOPs, delivery of EHS training packages or using specialized external consultants.
Compliance, Auditing & Reporting
- Conduct internal audits to assess compliance with EHS programs and processes.
- Collect, analyze, and manage the reporting of EHS performance data to meet internal and external requirements.
Qualifications
Experience and Skills
- Experience in pharmaceutical or GMP-regulated manufacturing (min. 4 years).
- In-depth understanding of workplace health and safety regulations (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS), hazard identification and control methods, and best practices in injury prevention and safety management systems.
- Experience in managing/ advising on health and safety hazards or relevant to operations at a pharmaceutical manufacturing site.
- Excellent understanding of risk assessment, risk management and auditing techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including delivering impactful safety training.
- Demonstrated ability to assess complex safety issues, perform root cause analyses and implement practical, effective solutions that drive continuous improvement.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and regulatory compliance.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to integrate EHS into day-to-day operations and project planning.
- Self-directed and proactive in identifying risk, initiating improvements, and driving accountability for health and safety performance at the site.
Education
Required:
- Post-secondary education in relevant Health & Safety, Engineering discipline, Environmental Sciences, or equivalent.
Preferred:
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)/ equivalent
Working Conditions:
- Combination of office and manufacturing work environment; typically, 7.5 hours/day but can vary depending on the demands of the day due to projects, emergencies, etc.
